Christmas travel?

I was just wondering if anybody is planning to travel to family over Christmas.
I live in what i believe will be Tier 1 wanting to travel to an area with no restriction in England to see my dad at Christmas .
I am a single adult on my own as is he. I've not seen any family all year.
I'd have liked to fly directly but they cancelled all flights except from Edinburgh.

I would find it really unfair if ppl are allowed to travel at October but not December.
I just feel a bit down after Jason Leitch's latest comment.

School in Edinburgh finishes on 22nd December. Maybe that date is Scotland wide? Not sure about universities if you want to avoid peak travel times.

To be fair for universities it might change if they will actually implement the staggered return the government has been talking about recently.

@Torvean32 yeah I hate motorways too but you can go on A roads most of the way and the are usually quieter too. Although by the time you're half way there you will crack and go on the motorway because it is so much faster!

Torvean32 · 27/10/2020 16:24

Thank you @WaxOnFeckOff I wasnt aware that you could get there driving on A roads. I have a real fear of slip roads too.

Once you enter Edinburgh how far would you need to go to get to the car hire places? I was there with my dad years ago and he had a nightmare with the one way system.

I flew last week and the whole thing felt very safe so I would have no problems flying if I were you. Get the bus to the airport. It sounds like you really need the break, make it as easy on yourself as you can.
I got a bus from Glasgow to Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago and it felt OK, the windows were open, it wasn't full.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/10/2020 18:47

I would guess that you could drop a hire car at the airport, loads of hire firms there.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/10/2020 18:51

You can generally get anywhere without going on the motorway, might take you ages though as you'd probably be going through all the wee places and using local roads. If you are coming onto the bridge that might be tricky without coming onto a motorway but I don't really know the approaches to the new bridge. You'd maybe have to come to clackmannan bridges and then into edinburgh that way. Train or Bus definitely the easiest. I've got off the train at Edinburgh Park before and taken the tram back to the airport.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/10/2020 18:56

Avoiding highways google says 3 hours 9 mins and would be via clackmannan bridges. Just going down the A roads and on to M90 it reckons 2 hours 16. That was just from generic "Aberdeen" rather than any particular area so would be town centre I guess.

Thanks everyone I appreciate all your support.
I used to go Aberdeen to Manchester then Manchester to Exeter before fly be went bust.

Before that i went Aberdeen to Newcastle, Newcastle to Cardiff, Cardiff to Plymouth. That route was stopped and Plymouth have no working airport now.

LoganAir sounded like a dream originally.

So i got another email from Logan Air changing my flight times, due to Covid regulations. No idea how a 2 hour period has anything to do with it.

I dont know why they are making changes when its still a while away.
I've also discovered that they are flying some routes under blue island.

Im seriously thinking of booking 2 routes down.

After more hassle from Loganair i thought I'd see what others thought. A flight from Aberdeen to Newquay via Heathrow. Flight means i could go on my original date.
I wouldn't have to take a bus.
I also wouldn't need to stay in Edinburgh.
It's also cheaper

Nobody is flying Heathrow - Newquay.

In other news the trains should be back next week.

Evilwasps · 30/10/2020 23:28

In answer to your car hire question, all the major hire companies have a base at Edinburgh Airport. The main car hire hub is easy to drive to and very close to the terminal building so you can drop off the car and walk there in a few minutes.

Flights are limited and the schedules are changing because of the restrictions caused by covid. All airports across the country, even the big ones like Heathrow and Gatwick have been decimated by the effects of the virus. So there isn't a better one to travel from or through, and there's no guarantee schedule changes won't be made. So just book whatever suits you best and keep your fingers crossed

Torvean32 · 31/10/2020 19:41

Sorry @nicerbeing that should have been Gatwick to Exeter. They've been running 2 flights a day.
Im sure ppl will still be going from Aberdeen to London.
I cancelled logan air today. You can wait up til 14 days to get money back.

Im gutted for areas like Cornwall, no outbreaks yet locked down with the rest.
