Any teachers who have moved from England to Scotland?

I trained to teach primary in England via a PGCE and also have a Masters degree in Education. I’ve been a teacher for over 10 years and I am a deputy head teacher. My DH and I are talking about moving to central Scotland where his family are but I don’t know how likely it is that I would get a job. We would need me to be working pretty quickly. I have read all about registering with the teaching council etc but it’s the actual practicalities around getting a job that concern me. Is is even remotely possible that I would be considered for leadership posts in state primary schools? Or is the reality that I would have to start as a supply teacher?

I have a friend who did it. Acquired credentials and taught in England for a number of years, moved back to Scotland a few years ago, straight into a teaching position. Primary school. Loves it.

It's a while since I was involved with the Parent Council of a Primary School - but when I was, I did end up on the panel to recruit the new head teacher for ds' primary school Was also involved with recruitment for depute heads as part of the parent council at secondary school (and refreshed my recruitment training - at which there were quite a few parent council members from primary schools - who were worrying that they wouldn't find sufficiently high calibre replacements for respected headteachers who were retiring).

I'd say that if you're flexible about where you want to locate and as long as you get yourself registered with the GTC, you have as good a chance as any - especially if you can demonstrate a successful track record.

How familiar are you with the Curriculum for Excellence? That's where doing some supply teaching might actually help.

I know about the curriculum for excellence but only through reading about it.

My husband and I are both teachers and have just moved to Scotland from England. I secured a job before we moved and my husband has been shortlisted for an interview within weeks of us moving. We're in northern Scotland though so I'm not sure how this compares to opportunities in the central belt. We've been made very welcome.

Sort out whether you can easily register with the GTCS. Sometimes they are not happy with English teaching qualifications - they should be able to tell you if this will be straightforward for you. If all that's fine I don't see why you should not be aiming for a similar post to your current one.
