Best schools in Bearsden & Milngavie

Hello there, my husband recently got a job in Gartcosh and we’re looking to relocate to Bearsden or Milngavie from Warrington near Manchester around the end of July. We have 2 daughters (6 yrs and 4yrs in May). I need to be close to Glasgow as I’ll be working there 2-3 days a week. Any recommendations on best schools and nurseries to consider in either Bearsden or Milngavie? Has anyone got any idea about Killermont PS, Bearsden PS, Craigdhu and Milngavie? It’s little bit daunting at the moment so any advice, recommendation, etc. would be much appreciated. X

2 of my nieces and one of my nephews go to bearsden PS and are very happy there. it seems to be a friendly school. good luck with your move! x

The commute to Gartcosh from Bearsden or Milngavie will be quite gnarly. Are you really set on there?

Thank you @sleepismysuperpower1 x

@foreverwashing I have to be at office in Glasgow city centre 2-3 days a week. So we thought by deciding on Bearsden I can get to Glasgow city centre easily and at the same time stay close to the girls. My husband is happy to commute from Bearsden to Gartcosh. He’s currently staying in Alva and commuting to Gartcosh so I think Bearsden will be ok. X

The primary schools in Bearsden and Milngavie are all fine If you think you will be here for secondary I would try and be in the catchment for Bearsden or Douglas.

Have you considered Lennie? Commute would be easier and the academy is a great secondary school.

I think @titsbumfannythelot (great user name) has had an autocorrect fail and meant Lenzie. It’s a short commute to Glasgow city centre and Gartcosh and has good schools. Would be much easier than Milngavie or Bearsden.

There is a good choice of schools in the area, none are particularly "bad". But there is a lot of pressure on school places in the area so if I were you I'd be looking to buy in catchment as placing requests can't be guaranteed. Both Douglas Academy and Bearsden Academy are excellent. Boclair is good too and the council have just announced that they'll be building a brand new school there too.

Primaries - Bearsden PS has a solid reputation but the downside is the geography and location. It's an old Victorian building on a busy road junction with no green space. Other local primaries like Mosshead or Killermont are completely different - in residential areas with lots of grass and playground areas. Baljaffray primary is another option, similar style of building to Mosshead.

Just remember to look ahead to secondary as placing requests are a serious issue in Bearsden and Milngavie. (Not sure if you're planning on being here that long). If you live in the catchment area for Bearsden Academy and opt for a primary school like Killermont which is in Boclair catchment, then you can still opt for Bearsden Academy at senior level and get a place as you're in their catchment. However, if you live in the catchment area for Boclair, or are just over the border into Stirlingshire, West Dunbartonshire or Glasgow city, you have no chance of getting into Bearsden Academy on a placing request as it's so full up.

Bearsden is lovely, we moved here just before my oldest started at primary and we've been very happy here.

Hi there, thank you so much. That’s very helpful. I think you’re right. I’ll be definitely looking ahead for secondary as well. I’ve heard many good things about Killermont school. X
