Schools/Villages in Scotland. South Lanarkshire or closer to Edinburgh

Hi,

We are going to be moving to Scotland in a few months and I'd love to hear suggestions and opinions on schools / villages / areas etc.

We are not set on a specific area just yet, although we would like to be in commutable distance to both Edinburgh & Glasgow, and below the M8 commuter belt.

We would prefer a village that has a primary school within and a secondary school in a nearby town.

So far we have seen a couple of houses in the village of Symington, nr Biggar. Could anyone give their first hand opinion of this village and it's surroundings please, especially the primary school as we have 4 young children.

Or of any other villages in this kind of area that has a good school, a nice community environment and possibly a local pub ;)

Damn you OP! I should have been in bed ages ago and instead i've been virtually strolling about Scotland picking where I want to retire to. And none of these properties are going to still be for sale when I get these bloody teenagers out of education, out of my house and out of my pocket!! :o

The location of the Balfron property would suit us perfectly.

Peebles is lovely, but there's currently nothing there to suit us :(

they are all gorgeous houses southernuplands but way over our budget ;)

Newmilns is okay but very quiet, not much to do.

Based on childhood memories, I wouldn't move to Newmilns but I think there's a stronger sense of community than there used to be

What about Blackwood or Lesmahagow in South Lanarkshire or Eaglesham in East Renfrewshire?

I wouldn't bank on being able to convert the attic in the symington house - a stroll about in google doesn't show any other houses that have done it which may indicate that the roof pitch isn't high enough. That might not be the case, but if it is then you might be looking at a new roof, which might not be possible either depending on the engineering required, type of foundations etc etc. That would turn it into a pretty big job which would probably cost more than you'd get back on the property at sale.

Neilston in East Renfrewshire? All the benefits of the high school in Mearns without the price tag, has a villagey feel - but be aware secondary boundaries can change.
