Private School Waiting Lists in Edinburgh

So, I applied to Watson's for my DD and had the anxious wait for the letter, only to find out (from said letter) that she's not been offered a place but, due to good scores on the entrance exams, she's on the waiting list. Has anyone had any experience of this? Any idea if all the kids who don't get in are placed on the waiting list and what are the chances of getting in? Is it unreasonable to email the school and ask?!

Not everyone gets put on the waiting list. Is it for one of the main entry years as you’ll probably have a better chance if it is. I do know someone whose son was on the waiting list for a non-Standard entry year, didn’t get in, but then did get in when he reapplied for P7, but I doubt anyone here can tell you what your chances are. No harm in contacting the school and asking if they can give any further information.

My niece was on the waiting list for 18 months before she got a place. It was quite some time ago but I vaguely remember she needed to resit the entrance exam again and got a place for P6.

Sorry, should have said, this is for S1 - a main entry year, yep. There were loads of kids there at the entrance exams.

OK, you’re probably best contacting the school to see if they would give any further information. FWIW, my DC say that during the school year various children do leave and they are immediately replaced by new children, so even if your DD doesn’t get admitted at the start of the year, a place may come up during the year.

Ah, ok WickedGoodDoge, good to know.

My dd got a place on the wait list for GWC but also got a place at another school. Within days we got a letter from GWC offering her a place, so it does happen. Most children will be entered for more than one test, so likely to get offered more than one place and these get released quite quickly. I also know of others who got wait list places at GWC.

Thanks guessmyusername. Did she go there, out of interest? I emailed them to ask where my DD was on the list but was told the kids are not ranked, which I find odd...

Galgorocks No she did not take up the place as her first choice was the other school. I understood her reasons for it and to be honest would have been happy with either, but as I wanted her to be happy allowed her preference to sway the decision.

Well, the good news is we got a call last week to say she's in, so happy here. Just in case anyone was wondering... :-D
