Working near Duke Street, where to live?

I have heard that Dennistoun is popular but I'm unsure about being close to work.

Someone also suggested Oatlands but it seemed to be built in the middle of an industrial estate.

I'm only looking for a flat but would like to be in walking distance of shops etc.

The drives area is the nicest.

Denniston is supposed to be up and coming - as evidenced by the rise in delis

Depends on whether you want to be in walking distance, cycling distance or public transport plus short walk distance of where you work. If the latter two, then Shawlands is a good bet. Lots of tenement flats, with a vibrant shopping area (with lots of good eateries) on Kilmarnock Road.

You could also consider Finnieston, or other stations that are on the low level line & go through Duke St.

Or Merchant City would be walkable.

Agree Mount Florida/Shawlands/Cathcart are not too far away.

Oatlands is a lot of new houses that have popped up in what was not a great area, not sure what it’s like now but I’d say there’s not much round about it you could walk to. Merchant City is lovely but you will pay a premium to stay there. Dennistoun is meant to be up and coming but I’ve not been there recently so haven’t seen it first hand. I agree you can’t go far wrong with shawlands/Cathcart or finnieston

Oatlands is not great, I would avoid. Dennistoun is great, I lived there for years. Onslow Drive and the other drives are nice, as is Kennyhill Square. I would avoid Duke Street and Alexandra Parade as both busy.

Dennistoun is about a 20 to 40 min walk to town depending on which end you live in, loads of nice coffee shops and delis have opened in the last few years. Close to train stations into Queen Street. Also flattering I prices are still not too crazy although possibly rising slowly.

I'd say it all depends on your budget really.

Thanks everyone. I'd like to buy and have a budget of around 130k, but I do plan on moving on in about 5 years (7 at the maximum) so I'd like something which wouldn't be too much hassle to sell on.

(on that note, there are very affordable new builds in the Eastfield developemnt. I take it they are the price they are because the area is not so good?)

I have ruled out Oatlands so I'm going to look at Dennistoun and Shawlands more closely. When you say the Drives, where exactly in Dennistoun is that?

£130k for what size of flat?

Do you have a preference of modern or tenement?

Parking or public transport?

Are schools an issue?

The drives are the bit between duke street and Alexandra parade north/south and cumbernauld road and craigpark east /west.

Don’t look east of Cumbernauld road.

2 bedroom max. No preference for new/ old but I want to be able to move straight in. No issue with schools. I do drive.

Dennistoun is a nice enough area to live in, like previous posters have said there are cafes etc.

Eastfields is a big housing estate that sits outside of Carntyne. Carntyne is not a bad area but there is not much of interest there. Lots of first time buyers and young families live in Eastfields, but it doesn’t have any amenities nearby.

Personally, I would prefer Dennistoun.
