Can anyone recommend a book with good coverage of the 17/18th centuries?

I'm not going to lie, I've been watching Outlander and I haven't really a clue what they're going on about.

Can anyone recommend a good book? Something not too heavy, if that's possible.

I like the Tuppenny Times series by Beryl Kingston.
