I would have always said gaylick.

Gawd, I remember Anne Lorne Gillies on TV many years ago. Her family happened to know the grand parents of my friend's family who were also Gaelic speakers.

I say gaylic on the basis I don't say Francaise or Deutsch or Italiano or Espagnol and had assumed "gaylic" is the English word for it.

Can I ask a related question? I'm reading Arthur Ransome's 'Great Northern' aloud at the moment, and there are many references to 'Gaels'. Is this pronounced as in 'blowing a Gale?' I've not heard it used ever.

Gay lick (yum)
Garlic (also yum)

An American asked on the pronunciation of Celtic:

Is it (K)eltic or (S)eltic?

Scottish guy responded:

We say (K)eltic but we'd call you a sunt

No offence to Americans

AmIthatbloodycold · 18/07/2017 15:17

Yes yes you would refer to Gaels as "gales"

But as has been said the language is Gah lic

If you said gaylic I would assume you were talking about Irish language.

The Fifers I know say J-eye everyone else says J-ay. (Nearly weed myself laughing the first time I heard someone say they had to put their jeyekit on).

Which reminds me of DS1 coming home from school in P1. I said to him to hang up his coat, and he said "you know mum, there are other words that mean coat" I then asked him what those words are, he said "well you can say jacket..." I nod approvingly "...and there is also Jaykit" he says. "I think we'll just stick with coat" says me :o
