Odd food recipe request with back story :)

Many moons ago I travelled to Scotland and toured all over. In every one of the ten or so B&Bs I stayed they served a Full English breakfast, all of them except one Grin
They served a Scottish Breakfast with square sausage, Bacon, egg, beans and the subject of this post.

Does anyone have a recipe for proper Scottish Breakfast Fruit Pudding?
I keep googling and finding Clootie Dumplings and other things but no Fruit Pudding Suasage style, fried lightly etc.

Many thanks.

I found this recipe..
1lb fillet of beef
1 large onion
1 dozen raisins (stoned)
1/4 lb stale bread
1 egg
flour, pepper and salt to taste

Put beef, onion, raisins through a mincing machine; soak bread in cold water, squeeze out and mix all together; season and bind with the egg.make into balls, flour, and brown by frying in very hot fat for a few minutes.Have ready some good boiling gravy, drop in, simmer slowly for 3/4 hour.Serve with gravy round the dish.

I think the only option is to grab a butcher and torture him until he reveals the recipe.

cdtaylornats · 09/08/2016 07:26

dotdot - that's a recipe for Scottish meatballs or almundigoes

Igneococcus · 09/08/2016 07:47

I'm going to buy some when I'm in town on Saturday and will do a full Masterchef-type palate test deconstruction with it. I might also be able to get my butcher to tell me what it is made of. I can play the "I'm forrin and want to understand more about Scottish cuisine" card.

Love black pudding, love white pudding, but fruit pudding is an abomination (as is anything that has devil's jobbies dried fruit in it! Grin

It is evidently a closely guarded secret and you could almost say a conspiracy.... Hmm

I asked my mother and she doesn't know how to make it either but she did say that leftover clootie dumpling is sometimes fried to go with breakfast.

PurpleFrog · 09/08/2016 09:42

I am ashamed to say I have never heard of fruit pudding until this thread. I know about white, red and black puddings, and am not keen on any of them. Is fruit pudding predominately a West Coast thing? I have heard of fried Clootie Dumpling for breakfast though!

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 09/08/2016 09:49

it is just some sort of mini clootie dumpling isn't it?? ....that's what I always thought.

I love it cooked in the bacon and sausage fat, all crisp and fruity yet sausagey and salty...mmmmmmm

Groovee · 09/08/2016 12:46

Purple we get it in Edinburgh. My mum used to get it in the butchers in slices.

PurpleFrog · 09/08/2016 12:53

Next time I'm in a proper butcher's I'll have look...

I think I'm going to have to get the individual ingredients and experiment.
then put the recipe online so others can find it

I love fruit pudding fried in bacon fat. Mmm.

How odd that there doesn't seem to be a recipe on the Internet. Very curious!!

cdtaylornats · 09/08/2016 22:13

It would be easier to find out how to make Coca-Cola.

Perhaps we should entrust all national secrets to the Scottish Butchers because they can obviously keep a secret.

WankersHacksandThieves · 09/08/2016 22:17

Yeah, I'd like to know the contents of their Steak Pie gravy if anyone manages to capture a butcher and have them injected with truth serum.

Firstly the fruit pudding recipe, then steak pie gravy recipe and then the real truth about Lord Lucan.

I heard it was wee Jimmy from the butchers in Dumfries high street that gave Bin Laden up to the CIA.

Igneococcus · 20/08/2016 07:22

Didn't managed to go the butcher but found a pack with four slices of fruit pudding in the village shop yesterday. I just had two slices for breakfast. They are delicious. Thanks OP for alerting me to this.
These definitely have no beef or onions, they are sweet and cinnamony and clooty dumpling in style. They fall apart in the pan easily and burn quickly because of the high sugar content.

Stressedout10 · 23/09/2016 12:45

Fruit pudding is just a clootie pudding with nutmeg cinnamon and dryer fruit

ZippyNeedsFeeding · 23/09/2016 16:05

Dancemoms link is ace- they make the best puddings ever! I think fruit pudding might be a west coast thing. I've never made it- I meant to but after learning how to make black pudding, I kind of lost interest (New Year's Day was not the best time to pick!).

trixymalixy · 25/09/2016 13:44

We had a fried breakfast this morning and I couldn't find any fruit pudding to have with it! This thread gave me a craving for it too.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 29/09/2016 01:05

That photo looks horrible and not like any white pudding I've ever seen. I agree white pudding is black pudding without the blood.

Isn't it amazing that you would never guess what black pudding is made of if you weren't told.

Fruit pudding does not have meat in it.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 29/09/2016 01:07

I think fruit pudding might be a west coast thing

No, you get it in the east coast and North East but I've never seen a recipe for it..

JustCallMeKate · 30/09/2016 08:45

It's a mealy pudding recipe with sultanas added to it. My mum used to make it. Is this what you mean OP?
