How much do you drink?

I'm a SAHM, and are constantly run off my feet. My watch keeps giving me awards and badges as to how much I'm moving. It's not enough as it's not what I'd like to do but I'm running after four kids all day everyday so it does build up cardio I think.

What I do to relax is a glass or two of wine at night, at this time of year it's more easy to indulge. Is that too much? How much do parents drink during week and weekend?

I should say I don't get a chance at weekends as so busy back to back.

Not much. Maybe twice a month. Sometimes just one glass of wine but every couple of month I have a few cocktails and I’m probably technically binge drinking.

I don’t think drinking 5 nights out of 7 is healthy.

TrumpetOfTheMatriarchy · 11/12/2023 19:27

You'll get equal responses of 'never' and 'every night' on this thread! I have older children 8,11,13 and I have a drink probably less than once a month. I am a light weight and hate the anxiety it induces in me the next day. I also grew up in a household with an alcoholic and I dont want my kids to go through any of that. Am v self aware of what and when I drink

Trinity69 · 11/12/2023 19:30

Hardly ever indoors. Might have one or two when I’m out but as I’ve aged, alcohol just doesn’t agree with me. I feel hungover to hell if I have 1 or 12, so I tend not to bother!

Chickydoo · 11/12/2023 19:31

I have a drink or two 3 or 4 nights a week

whatsthesenseinsharing · 11/12/2023 19:36

Thanks for sharing. I don't ever go out and haven't socialised in over two and a half years, if I was to binge i wouldn't be worth it next day so the glass or two I have I enjoy. It works out about 8-10 units a week... I'm going to google the guidelines 🤦🏼‍♀️

Do you mean you mean that you drink every week night but not at weekends? I’m the other way around - I have a bottle of wine over the course of two nights Friday and Saturday.

StopStartStop · 11/12/2023 19:40

Next to nothing. I had half a glass of champagne on my birthday, and might have another half a glass (ie, a tiny amount) at Christmas. That's it.

Olika · 11/12/2023 19:41

I don't drink as I have a 20m old other than one drink I had when I had a date night with my DH last week for the first time since DD was born. The guideline I just checked says less than 14 units so you are still below. For me 8-10 is a lot but that's purely as I didn't really drink before getting pregnant other than a random drink in a social setting.

englishrose1234 · 11/12/2023 19:43

I drink about 3 periods of times a year - usually on holiday, on a rare night out and at Christmas. I tend to have 4/5 drinks max per occasion.

I never really think about having a drink outside of these times - that's just me though and I know of plenty who drink 4/5 nights a week.

Alcohol is a known carcinogen, and it is directly proportional to the amount of alcohol you drink - so even cutting down slightly will be beneficial to your health.

artemis9 · 11/12/2023 19:43

I have a bottle Thursday to Sunday.

artemis9 · 11/12/2023 19:43

Of wine... not spirits!

Sorry, slightly gobbledygook message there at the start - I promise this isn't one of the occasions where I'm drinking!!!

Not enough

terraced · 12/12/2023 05:41

I stopped 18 months ago. I was drinking almost every night.

Nothankyou22 · 12/12/2023 05:45

A couple of glasses a fortnight if I’m seeing friends of an evening, occasional odd glass at weekend unless I’m going out to a bar or brunch etc but that’s usually every 4-8 weeks and I drink a lot more in those cases.

Zoflorabore · 12/12/2023 06:02

I started drinking really young about 14 and was out every weekend as a teenager and then went away to university. Drinking was a huge part of my life and then I settled down and had my son at 25 and only really had a blowout a few times a year but would still have a bottle of wine or two at home occasionally.

as I hit my 30’s I found i hadn’t really found a drink that I really loved and would just get pissed for the sake of it and then once I hit my 40’s ( add in a few chronic health conditions) I was having 3 day hangovers which were horrendous so I just decided to stop. That was NYE 2019.
I went through lockdown without a drink and I didn’t miss it at all, certainly never missed the hangovers and I’ve realised I don’t need alcohol to enjoy myself socially though it’s rare I go out.

my son is now 20 and he doesn’t drink either and many people think that’s strange. He has asd and said he prefers to be in control. He’s extremely sociable and drinks Pepsi Max/similar on nights out.

ive done several things I really regret whilst drinking and I see people around me now drinking far too much and some also making terrible choices.

so for me it’s almost 4 years. Sometimes I feel like a little drink but when it comes
to having one I can’t be bothered.

sorry that was long!

About seven drinks per year.
On Melbourne Cup Day, at Weddings and when eating out with friends and family I sometimes have a wine or G&T but mostly I choose and enjoy the non alcoholic drinks.
I LOVE iced water and iced tea.

evryevrytime · 12/12/2023 06:15

I have a single drink 5 nights a week. Usually it's a small bottle of beer. Occasionally I have a cocktail instead. I'll probably do dry January and have Freedamm alcohol free beer instead as I usually do this every year.

This works out at 6 units a week which is absolutely fine for me. Everything in moderation.

Caspianberg · 12/12/2023 06:20

Very rarely. I had a muelled cider at local Christmas event this week, and that was first in a few months.

I don’t feel the need to have Alcohol. My parents wasted so much money and time on going out drinking, it just doesn’t sit right with me. I would rather have a Herbal tea and spend that £100 a month saving doing something nice with my child.
At home we only have something in for an event, like Xmas or summer bbq. But more and more we tend to just get alcohol free alternatives now. I think it’s healthier also

muddlingthrou · 12/12/2023 06:49

This thread is bringing out the smug non-drinkers in force! I think your habit is a good one to keep an eye on, as if it crept up any further it wouldn't be good for you.

I drink a similar amount to you spread over Thursday-Sunday. My favourite thing to do is drink a glass of red slowly while I make dinner.

FedUpMumof10YO · 12/12/2023 06:51

I don't drink. I gave it up about 2 years ago.

Find another way to relax.

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 12/12/2023 07:26

Maybe twice a month at home? Just a glass of red with dinner and occasionally another after.

SallyWD · 12/12/2023 07:36

People will disagree but I think 2 glasses of wine a night is too much. I'm imagining large glasses here as people generally drink more at home than the 175ml you'd get in a pub.
I tend to drink once every couple of weeks, maybe two glasses. I'm not being pious. I used to be a binge drinker in my youth but can't be doing with it now.

Sleepsleepsleep123 · 12/12/2023 07:38

A glass, maybe 3 nights a week. Much, much less than I used to.

3luckystars · 12/12/2023 07:43

Not much, it used to be none but now maybe once a month.

What do you mean ‘back to back’ on weekends.
