Moving from Witney to Faringdon, Oxfordshire. Bad decision?

Hi All,

Does anyone live in or around Faringdon and can give us an opinion of what's it like to live there?

We're currently renting in Witney and are looking to buy a property in the area, however we cannot quite find something decent within our budget. We had found a newly built property in one of the newer estates, but the sale fell through due to a bad survey result.

We've started looking around in other towns and found a nice new build property in Faringdon, but we don't know much about the area. We visited a few times to get a sense of what it'd be like to live there and this is my assessment:

  • the town centre seems dead; a couple of nice little cafes, but that's about it.
  • not many amenities, at least compared to Witney (but appreciate it's a smaller town, which is ok).
  • doesn't feel unsafe and it's rather quiet (which we like).
  • not many options in terms of schools (we have a 3 months old boy)?
  • nice countryside nearby (similar to Witney I guess).

We actually like the idea of living in a smaller town, but we're also wondering whether it's just a romanticised view and we might end up hating it once the novelty wears off. We lived in London before Witney. Took a while to adjust, but we eventually started to like living here (especially the nature around it, safety and proximity to Oxford). Buying a house is a big investment and we wouldn't to be in a position to having to sell in a few years and/or being stuck because of location.

There's seems to be a bit going on looking at the Faringdon FB groups, but again hard to give a fair assessment unless you lived there for a while.

Hopefully someone can give us a better idea of what Faringdon has to offer.

TIA!

Bumping for you (I realise this is an old thread and you have probably made your decision by now!). My DH used to live in Faringdon in his early 30s, before we met. He loved it, but he grew up in the countryside, and he enjoys driving so he didn't mind having to drive everywhere. I don't think there was a huge amount to do in Faringdon - from what he's told me, he had to drive to access most of his hobbies.
