No, mine has the garage on one side and a wooden fence on the other.

RobinRobinMouse · 10/04/2023 19:11

No, ours is on a concrete platform up the garden. I didn't know these existed, is it in case the tank is close to the house?

squashyhat · 10/04/2023 19:17

My tank is open on 2 sides and against a right-angled fence on the other.the fence sides are covered with fireproof board up to about 6 feet. Similar to this

Mine is surrounded by 4 walls and is about 20m from the house.

Do we need one?

110APiccadilly · 10/04/2023 19:24

No. I once lived somewhere where the oil tank was in a sort of garage attached to and under part of the house, which was slighty scary! I never knew why - the house had a nice big garden. By comparison, my current set up of oil tank at the other end of the garden is beautifully safe.

Caspianberg · 10/04/2023 19:27

No. Until we got rid 6 months ago it was in our cellar.

RudsyFarmer · 10/04/2023 19:33

I have a feeling the legislation to do with fire resistant barriers kicks in with new oil tanks being fitted or oil tanks being replaced.

CleaningOutMyCloset · 10/04/2023 20:01

No. It's in our front garden with a hedge in 2 sides

lljkk · 10/04/2023 20:33

me neither, it's about 10m from house, next to garage. I try to screen it with tall vegetation, though.

cptartapp · 10/04/2023 20:49

No. It's on concrete slabs in the hidden mostly hidden by greenery.

bigbluebus · 10/04/2023 21:44

No. Pretty sure mine doesn't comply with current building regs - but it did when it was installed 20 years ago. I'll worry about it when I need to replace the tank or plan to move house.

Would you perchance be advertising your product by masquerading it as a question OP?

BotterMon · 10/04/2023 21:47

Mines between garage and fencing surrounds other 3 sides. It was replaced 2 years ago and although we had to have a new base installed, fireproof screening wasn't a requirement.

Lancelottie · 10/04/2023 21:50

Yes, we do, but nothing to stop the flames shooting upwards into the neighbour’s overhanging tree, leaping into the hedge and devastating the neighbourhood, so I’m not sure it’s very helpful.

Not that I tend to catastrophise or anything.

How very cynical. Nope.

Sorry for the lack of reply. I am pretty new to MN and find it baffling that I don't get notifications of responses to my own threads!

We were thinking about buying a house that only has a 650 litre tank and it's pretty close to a boundary wall (25cm, current regs state 30 plus just for the footing surrounds).

I was trying to see if I could get an 1100 fitted in the same place but it would need some sort of fire resistance to be compliant.

But - we are not buying the house now - so that is that.

I look forward to the day I am no longer on oil, we have had it in two homes now.

Thanks for your replies.

No, you don't. You only really need to worry if there are fences, windows, doors or bits of house within about 1.5 metres. Yours is miles away and given the distance you don't even need those walls if you don't want them.

(Probs far prettier than looking at an oil tank though).

Ooh, that's interesting. If we eventually end up in yet another oil based house, I will definitely bear that in mind. Thanks for the info.

It depends on what it's close to. Fences, windows, doors, house overhangs. If you have none of those within about 1.5 metres, nothing is needed.
