Plates /glasses/cutlery out
BBQ cleaned & ready
Garden games sorted for kids
Drinks in cooler
Ice made
Meat to marinade
salads to prepare

and millions of other tasks.
He knows this, because we discussed what needs to be done.

And he is cleaning the fecking car "because people will be walking past it..."

I AM LIVID!

Does anyone else's DH do this sort of thing?

Grace, me too. I can often be found ironing lovingly on the floor inamongst piles and piles of crap

Men are weird sometimes about their priorities list.
My own method is that if people are coming round you hit the big stuff in the living room + kitchen first - because thats what they see when they walk in and where they will spend time.
load dishwasher
Clear kitchen surfaces
remove any binbags / rubbish/ recycling
throw toys intop large toytub (kept for that purpose)
Tuck shoes under cupboard or put away
Check for dirty socks and pot noodle containers (DH) and apple cores (me)
If possible move the overflowing washing / ironing pile to the spare room
HOOVER

then move onto the loo for a quick tidy/ wipe of loo seat + sink

Then hoover the landing

Swift tidy of DS room (or at least creating a clear path across the floor) because he likes to show people his new cabin bed and tent

Only after this do you scrub the inside of the oven, decided to sort out the cutlery drawer, change the bedsheets or do the ironing. (all displacement activities DH has done before now)
