Please tell me what the 'd' stands for in dh, ds, dd

Hi, sorry, I know this isn't related to relationships but it's just driving me mad that I can't work out what the 'd' in dp, dh, dd and ds means. Obviously, I understand that the acronyms stand for partner, husband, daughter and son but WHY THE D???

Doing my head in. Please enlighten me.

It's nauseating and I hate it. Why not just H or S? Gets more confusing when you have things like BF for boyfriend, bestfriend and breastfeeding, and GP for grandparent or general practitioner.
And just seems silly when people go on about their "darling husband" and then say how they hate him.

Yes, 2rebecca, that was my problem when I was trying to guess the meaning and thought it might be dear/darling. It seems not only unnecessary but misleading...

It makes it easier to understand who you are refering to.
You can just insert what ever prefix you want it to stand for! As seen here already.

It saves any confusion especially if you have children with the initial H or S.

I ignore what it actually stands for.

Dh normally stands for dickhead in my house anyway!!

I don't use it. Costs me whole seconds to type the words out, but that's just the sacrifice I make.

Really rather depends on context.
Is useful to remove the D when said member of family is being bastardly though.
