Really fed up of friend's constant put down's

I met a friend a couple of years ago through a local online Mum's network.

She disclosed she had some significant mental health problems, which caused her to give up work and move onto disability benefits shortly before her daughter was born.

I was very sympathetic to this, and that some mental health conditions can impact how you speak to people/ come across; but I'm beginning to suspect it is being used as an excuse to cover up her behaviour. For context, she doesn't seem to have issues moderating her behaviour around other , more outspoken mum's.

She reguarly introduces me to strangers we meet on days out as the "quiet, soically awkward one " in the group, which is obviously embarrassing , and I'm not convinced entirely true, ( I've spoken to several friends not connected to this woman , who say whilst I am non confrontational, I do not cone across as quiet and soically awkward at all). Also even if your friend was "soically awkward," why would you humiliate them by continuously saying that to strangers in front of them?!

I was selected to give a speech abroad at a University for work , she messaged to ask how it went, and when I said it went well, she replied " that's a suprise, as you don't look like you could speak to more than 3 people at the same time."

She also publicly took the piss out of how I walked at a mutual friend's baby shower a couple of weeks ago, despite knowing I have a longstanding knee issue and have very recently had knee surgery.

She reguarly tells both my sons off, ( age. 4 and 5), for very minor misbehaviour in front of me, e.g she told my son she wasn't like me and wouldn't take his "shit" when he didn't want to eat his lunch on a day out - it was a new food he had never tried before). She also took it upon herself to tell him he wouldn't be allowed on the rides unless he ate it ...

There have been issues with mutual, non-confrontational friend's having issues with her behaviour too.

On a day out she started boasting about how she had the "best banter " out of all of us, and started calling another very quiet mixed race woman with us a very derogatory racial slur as a "joke" , whilst boasting this proved she had the "best banter" . I regret not saying something at the time, but it was very hard when it is all under the guise of it being a joke / her having the "best" banter, but others members of the public were staring at us in annoyance and disbelief, and it was embarassing.

An acquantance also cut her off after she went to a christmas fete with her, and her 7 year old son, ( who has diagnosed SEN) started tantrumning when it was time to leave . She said loudly , " Oh yes, Thomas* you are tantrumning because Mummy never communicates with you and explains its the end of the day does she." The acquantance cut her off then and told me why ....

My issue is she doesn't seem to have these incidents with people who are more likely to say something to her.

She's also made quite a few comments about weight, and there was an incident that happenned on her birthday night out I'm really uncomfortable with. We are both mid twenties, and in the club there was a girl who looked no older than 18 or 19, presented as very vulnerable and having some additional needs, and was very overweight and dressed in obviously unfashionable clothes. She secretly took a photo and uploaded it to multiple group chats we are in to laugh at how "fat, spotty and ugly" this young girl was. It made me very uncomfortable to be secretly taking photos of what looked like a very vulnerable 18 year old stranger to laugh at her, when she was about 8 years younger than us, ( i was also concerned by the behaviour of men in the club that night towards the 18 year old).

The thing is confronting her would end badly, I am very stressed with my own issues, but im beginning to rhink its not just mental health, when other louder people don't get these put downs.

She sounds appalling. She's racist and she's picking on your kids! Why would you spend another second in this person's company? Just cut her off. You don't have to confront her.

Potooooooooes · 19/10/2026 08:22

She is no friend.

No need to confront.

If you can't drop her immediately, fade her out, be unavailable, don't reply straight away.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 19/10/2026 08:24

This is not a friend and you don't need her in your life. Don't put yourself to the trouble of analysing why she does it.

user7789 · 19/10/2026 08:26

This isnt about MH issues.

Your "friend" is a vile piece of shit and I'd be dumping her immediately. Horrible, horrible woman.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 19/10/2026 08:28

No need to confront. Just always be busy

Pumpkin2026 · 19/10/2026 08:28

I think the issue is our children go to the same school, ( albeit different years/ classes), a very small town and mutual friends .....life would be very difficult if I confronted properly.

Don't confront, just fade her out fast. She's a nasty bully.

You don't need to confront her. Just go quiet and stop responding.

This is really appalling behaviour.

I have some similar in my life and have been fading her out for a while. She's persistent but so am I!

Her needs don't trump yours, and certainly not your kids.

She's no friend that's for sure.

Savvysix1984 · 19/10/2026 08:33

She sounds awful on so many levels. You don’t need to confront, just take a step back and be unavailable.

you may not be the ‘quiet or socially awkward’ but she certainly sees you that way which is why she thinks she can walk all over you.

LlamasDramas · 19/10/2026 08:36

Dump. And don't look back!

So don’t. Just fade her out. Make excuses, be busy, take longer and longer to rely on texts. Doesn’t sound like you get anything from this friendship. Let her be mates with the louder characters who she is nice to.

MyKindHiker · 19/10/2026 08:41

In terms of confronting her I just feel that’s not your job. You don’t need to educate her how to behave. But you also don’t need to put up with it.

Unless your mutual friends are as appalling as she is they are likely to be aware of her behaviour. It’s unlikely she can hide it from them completely. It could be that she spends time one to one with you because none of them will tolerate her other than in groups.

Just fade her out. It’s not going to affect your child. If your mutual friends drop you without wanting to know your point of view, find better friends

Bringemout · 19/10/2026 08:44

Mutual friends will thinking they wish they were brave enough to fade her out as well. She’s actually just a horrible person, I wouldn’t usually say that about someone but she is racist, rude, deeply unpleasant and overbearing.

Yogabearmous · 19/10/2026 08:48

She is bullying your children !
what a nasty piece of work. I would be blunt “you are not nice to be around and you swore at my children, so it’s best we don’t speak anymore” then block her and walk away if she tries to talk to you.
show your children they don’t have to put up with bullies. Their self esteem will take a battering if you allow mums friends to speak like this to them in front of their own mum.

speakball · 19/10/2026 08:58

she’s awful. sweetheart, why is it taking you so long to recognise and get away from a really shitty person? she doesn’t like you but i suspect she’s not big on ‘liking people’

Dollymylove · 19/10/2026 09:00

I'm surprised this horror actually has any friends. Bin her off and if she asked why just tell her that her behaviour is unacceptable

Madamefroufrou · 19/10/2026 09:05

OP, we are judged by the company we keep, whether we realise this or not,
which is why most people are circumspect with initial aquaintances.

This so called friend is disagreeable and unpleasant! She will continue to
upset you which would be a shame and undeserved.

As @MrsDanversGlidesAgain says, it doesn’t matter why she does it,
she is not a friend.

Fwiw I had a friend like this, always bossy and critical,
then one time she came to stay with us she started the mocking in front
of my children,
later telling me how upset they were of the way she spoke to me.
I drove her to the railway station on the Sunday and have not seen her since.

I don’t miss her, never thought about her actually, felt only relief and
wondered why I hadn’t ended things sooner.

Op, perhaps your friend is jealous of you, as I realised mine was, always
trying to pull me down, with ridicule, barbed comments, passive aggressive
opinions, tiresome, destructive, kts exhausting isn’t it.

Her MH difficulties are not your problem to solve or accommodate.
Cut yourself some slack here and be happier ! Flowers

hobbledyhoy · 19/10/2026 09:16

Awful and you deserve much better friends than this.

Appreciate the circumstances prevent a show down so I’d just start the fade. She’ll move onto her next victim soon enough.

NarnianQueen · 19/10/2026 09:25

Just drop her
she has zero redeeming features
she will want to keep you around though, because being so horrible will result in friends dropping there quite often!

emuloc · 19/10/2026 09:28

She would not be getting another minute of my time. Very unpleasant sounding Woman.

Girlintheframe · 19/10/2026 09:33

She sounds vile!

i think you have 4 options

  1. Carry on as you are
  2. confront her
  3. only spend time with her when you have to
  4. distance yourself completely

Personally i would go for 2 or 4. I’m not sure I could hold my tongue to someone as cruel and rude as she is

anonymous24601 · 19/10/2026 09:43

You aren't socially awkward, don't give that a second thought. She's just projecting all her inadequacies on to you - don't take them on. This is one of those circumstances where you don't have to be kind (especially to random people you meet online who tell you they have mental health problems so you'll give them more leeway.) The easiest thing to do here would just be to fade away, start being busy, don't answer her, say you have a lot going on, be friendly but breezy and dismissive when you run in to her. It's hard but it gets easier! I don't see any point in confronting, just distance yourself

Namechangeforthis88 · 19/10/2026 08:30

Don't confront, just fade her out fast. She's a nasty bully.

Just do this no need for drama .
if she asks, just say you’re busy . No one needs people like this in their lives

LilyBunch25 · 19/10/2026 09:48

Put simply, she's not a friend. She's a toxic element you can eliminate from your life.
