Dating foster sister from 25 years ago

I'm in a bit of a weird situation that I desperately need help with. I reconnected with a girl that was a foster sister 25 years ago. We didn't talk to each other much when she lived with my family. She had her own boyfriend and I had my girlfriend and own group of friends. We are in our 40s now. She was walking down an isle in Walmart one way and I was coming the other way and we both stared at each other and walked by each other. We both turned around at the same time after we both realized who we were looking at. We exchanged numbers and started talking on the phone 2 or 3 times a week. So that went on for months when she brought up coming to visit for a few days. So she came up for 5 days a few months ago and by the end of it. I fell in love with her. We both like to drink socially and one thing lead to the next. Clothes came off but we didn't have sex. Everything but.
She said we can't keep doing this because we were foster brother and sister. To me it was just like meeting a stranger. I haven't seen her in 25 years since she lived with us. We didn't talk for two months after that until she called me today. She did find a boyfriend in that time and he was yelling at her and calling her names in the background and started crying on the phone. She was balling and said I have to go. She said I love you talk to you soon in a crying voice and I said I love you more and we hung up. I am not a very emotional person. I don't remember the last time I cried. But I did cry when she hung up for the fact that I there is someone out there treating her that way. When all she did was make me smile and make happy to be with her. She is the female version of me and we have so much in common that it's not even funny. Too many to list. I'm a bit ashamed to admit this but I had more fun with her in 5 days than I did with my ex of 5 years.

I'm scared to tell her how I really feel. It could make her not want to talk to me again and I don't want that at all. I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't I feel.

I missed her 5 seconds after she left. Dream about her all the time. Think about her all the time. Wonder if she's ok all the time. The feeling of getting to hold her was absolutely amazing. I'd do almost anything to have that feeling again. She said she felt so safe around me. An ex of hers beat her and put her in the hospital for three days.

What would you do in this situation?
Am I wrong to be in love with her?

I desperately need advice on this. This is eating me alive every minute of everyday.

Sorry the post is kinda all over the place. That's just how my brain feels on the matter. All over the place.

Thanks

If she wanted to be with you, she would have called you sooner. And she would not have found another boyfriend.

Leave this is your fantasy.

I also didn't call her.

She sounds vulnerable and damaged. You sound needy and clingy. This has disaster written all over it. Just leave her be and find something else to focus on.

I don’t even know how American men find Mumsnet when Reddit is right there, the natural home of a 40 year old man.

If you love her, tell her how you feel.

TrappedByThisDesk · 19/10/2026 15:42

She said we can't keep doing this because we were foster brother and sister.
How long did you live in the same house, and at what ages? She may feel weird about it if you lived like siblings for several years, so she may never want a romantic/sexual relationship with you.

I'm scared to tell her how I really feel. It could make her not want to talk to me again and I don't want that at all.
Telling her is the only way out of this. You can't carry on as you are.

The rest of your post shows you as being extremely emotional, and potentially very vulnerable. I strongly recommend you seek counselling as you come from a damaging background (hence being in foster care) and seem very unstable. You have a lot of issues to work through.

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 19/10/2026 15:50

How long were you both living together as children?
How old were you both?

It sounds like she’s incredibly vulnerable. If you hadn’t already overstepped that boundary I would suggest that you offer friendship and nothing more but as you have I would walk away to protect her.

Did you aye

OMGDidYouSayThat · 19/10/2026 21:19

Technically you’re not related so just keep meeting up and see how it goes, you might be the rock she needs.
