So today I think I upset someone at work today and I genuinely feel awful. I have a good banter with a colleague we have a laugh and take the piss all the time at each others expense. We always so sometimes it can go a touch too far sometimes we can laugh it off.
this colleague by rank could be considered at my level ish I come with a little more experience than that have and ive done their job before. I was chosen to deliver some info about key agenda items to a few teams. We were say in our team when I was asked. He said something to me and I felt it was in an abrupt manner something sarcastic about why I was chosen and another colleague said yeah didnt they fancy choosing insert other colleagues name.

So I do say “I have been a leader before this job so being chosen in this context as ive done this before does make sense.” Colleague then said “not a d* measuring competition” and eye rolled at me I then said i feel you tried to undermine my intellect. We then had a meeting later and he passed over to me and I said “what shall I add you’ve said everything” I really didn’t mean it to come across badly at all but he sort of just closed the office door later and didn't really say much to me after that and normally we head down in the lift after work and they just left.

I genuinely don’t ever want to upset anyone. Have I done wrong because the anxiety is actually eating me up. I’m the kind of person that usually is reactive then later on realises I may have been out of line.

Are you spiralling? You have two topics on here currently and seem a bit disjointed in your writing.
Someone that gives banter should be able to take it. But maybe pull back a bit on the banter so that you don't have to face these consequences. It will have all blown over in a few days

JustTalkToThem · 16/10/2026 21:52

If you think you misstepped, just talk to them, and apologise.

Does it come across as really horrible?

See I felt a bit uncomfortable almost like they made these comments unnecessarily so I snapped

He is the rude one. Would he have said that to a man?

Seaoftroubles · 16/10/2026 23:14

He was rude and you stood up for yourself. You have done nothing wrong and certainly don't sound horrible.

But in the meeting later he passed over to me and I said I sort of said well what do you need me to add
i can be unintentionally direct without knowing

No one else is thinking about it over the weekend so neither should you.
Put it away and do something you enjoy as a distraction.
I'm diagnosed Gad and know how overthinking can takeover.

its madness isn't it. yesterday someone, somewhere murdered someone, they still have the body in the boot of their car and they just climbed into bed and dropped offf to sleep like a log. and then there’s us worrying about accidentally hurting peoples feelings at 2,3,4am.

was their a significant and significantly unkind adult in your childhood?

Lurkingandlearning · 17/10/2026 08:06

None of that sounds like banter to me. It was more like a terse conversation about who should lead a presentation and a lack of mutual preparation. It should have been clear what you were expected to contribute before the presentation began.

I think, unless people are very close, banter is very risky. Who decides what is “too far “? Can you look at the person and see that today is not a good day for them? The chances of someone getting upset are pretty high. Aren’t there other ways of having light hearted conversations with colleagues without digging at them?
