Splitting from partner with baby

Jonasate · Today 00:15

We aren’t getting on at the minute. Petrified he will try to take baby away from me if we do split. I would want to move back to my hometown with baby which is 1.5 hour drive away. We currently live in his hometown.

Does anyone know what rights he has straight away? We are in the UK and he is on the birth certificate etc. Can he make me stay local with baby? I’d be wary to leave baby with him overnight, he’s never looked after baby alone for more than a few hours. It’s more than likely his mum that would do the childcare from his side.

Can’t believe I am even posting this. Ugh.

Get legal advice. So you know your options.

How old is the baby? Are you breast feeding?
What hours does he work? Would his employer support him in flexible hours?

You have 18 years to get through as co-parents so maybe think about how, practically, you can both continue to parent your child.

As pp have said, you need legal advice. In theory, if your move prevents or disrupts him having a normal parental relationship, then yes, the court could block your move.

Or the court might decide that the circumstnces are such that you need the support of your mum/family, and allow it.

Before you get to the point of leaving is there any way to resolve your issues, is it that bad that you need to leave?
