He won’t phone is he married?

Met a guy online a few weeks ago. We were both keen and met up quickly, he seems very open and straightforward. Turns out we know a few people in common through work. Had a great first date and ended up sleeping together. I was then away overseas for a couple of weeks and we’ve been texting everyday. He’s said he wants to meet again (logistically hasn’t been possible since I got back) but he won’t pick up the phone to speak. I’ve asked a couple of times, but he doesn’t do it. Nothing suggests he’s secretly in a relationship but is this odd?

Have you asked the mutual acquaintances?

MyPlumWasp · 09/10/2026 23:24

Some people just don’t like phone calls and don’t want to be pressured into them. I am one of them, so is my DH.

I mean he might be married, but this doesn’t mean he is.

Doesn’t do what?

itsnotalwaysthateasy · 10/10/2026 00:01

and you both has sex and now he's difficult to contact.
Date people and don't have sex on the first date.

pinksoxinbed · 10/10/2026 05:03

hes not difficult to contact in that sense and is very open about his life, just doesn’t t seem to want to speak. Says it would be awkward as his teen daughter is around and would be asking questions, which sounds plausible I guess

He’s given you an explanation then. Is he married? We don’t know any more than you do.

Esperanza25 · 10/10/2026 08:31

Lots of people don’t like phone calls these days. Messaging can just be more convenient. The point about his daughter is valid too. If he’s messaging every day as you say, I wouldn’t worry and I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion that he’s married. Just see how it goes.

I hate phone calls. Luckily my boyfriend (who I found on Hinge) does too. We've been together 9 months now and we have spoken on the phone ONCE (I was lost and he was trying to find me but I did send him my location before trying the phone 😂)

NorwegianForest · 10/10/2026 08:37

As you know a few people in common it seems unlikely he's married. Wouldn't they know and tell you? Maybe he just doesn't like speaking on the phone.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 10/10/2026 10:03

We can’t answer the ‘is he married’ question. But you have friends in common so ask them.

I can say though, that when my two girls were living at home, I’d never have a phone call with a new date…it was just too awkward! They always had friends round, the house was busy with teens and there was absolutely no privacy. It could just be this. But who knows 🤷‍♀️ This was 20 years ago for me…times have changed with teens. They seem to spend all their time in their bedroom now don’t they? Maybe he just doesn’t like talking on the phone.

Brightbluesomething · 10/10/2026 10:32

Teens are nosey so I get why he wouldn’t want to talk while she’s there as you’ve just met. But does he have her all the time? If she’s only with him for part of the week surely he can speak to you on the nights she’s not there. If not then that raises alarm bells. Either your communication styles don’t match, or he’s just wanting to text as it’s lower effort. He might be in a relationship but this alone isn’t enough to come to that conclusion.

Usernamesalltakenblues · 10/10/2026 10:36

It's a new relationship. You aren't central to his life. It sounds as though he wants to compartmentalise you for the time being.

Smallestshadow · 10/10/2026 10:40

I hate phone calls, especially with a potential date I’d never met. I’d do it in an established relationship (if I had to). I’d prefer to just meet up and talk face to face at the start.
Edit- misread- I can see you’ve already met! But the same still stands- I’d hate phone calls with a very new relationship.
