Struggling with DH ED

DH has always had a lower libido than me. Wouldn’t say mine is particularly high once a week is good for me whereas once a month is good for him. In the first year of dating we had sex often & it was great on both parts. He had a bout of not being able to hold an erection and to be honest I felt quite offended and like it was a me issue, I was upset with him etc. He says it’s not unusual for him to have periods where his sex drive is up and down and occasions where he is into it and feels aroused but will then go soft. He gets embarrassed about it and it can make him nervous for the next time incase it happens again.
I felt a little put of at times because it was killing the mood for me but would still give it a go every month or so and 80% of the time it would be fine and we both had a good time. Fast forward a few years he went through something that caused a lot of depression and ptsd, he gained a lot of weight , had 0 self esteem and had absolutely no interest in sex at all for a little while. Just assumed he was going through a lot and gave him space and time. We made it out the other end and started to have sex again. I got pregnant then gained about 5 stone and in return I felt gross about myself and self conscious and in all honesty I think he also struggled with my new body and didn’t find me as attractive. Our child is 1 now and I’ve lost all of the weight and a bit more than before I became pregnant.

my sex drive has returned & so had my confidence in myself. Myself and DH spoke and said we would schedule once a week to get ourselves back into it. 5 weeks on the run & we both were finding it great until again he’s now struggling to hold an erection again , or sometimes even struggling to get it going in the first place, finding it hard to climax and he says he feels embarrassed and pressured to perform which then makes him even more anxious and makes it worse. He says he rarely masturbates because he struggles alone too, rarely gets a morning glory anymore and if he does on the rare occasion he will masturbate to make sure he doesn’t get testicle pain throughout the day but he finds little enjoyment from it and it takes a lot of work for him to actually climax. I’m at such a loss, I feel like I’ve explored so many avenues. I’ve lost the weight, I look after myself well, I make the effort with new spicy outfits all the time and get myself glammed up, we are affectionate during the day.

I can’t help but feel constantly like it’s a me problem & im unattractive/not good enough. We spoke about how I feel & I’ve told him eventually I will be getting a divorce because I can’t do a sexless marriage. He says he rarely desires sex. I want to feel desired and have my needs met. He says he can try but without the pressure of having to end in penetrative sex & just to pleasure me and see if it ends somewhere for him also. That just makes me feel like he’s doing it for the sake of me instead of us both having intimacy and a good time together. Our marriage is other wise ‘perfect’ I’m trying to support him on the off chance it’s a medical issue and not actually me but how do you shift the feeling that they wouldn’t have these issues if they met up with a shiny new lady. He was broken when I voiced it could lead to divorce for me and it’s that serious to me. He immediately booked with a private clinic to have bloods to test his testosterone and says he will go from there.

has anyone been through this and it’s gotten better?

sorry for the long winded rant! And thanks if you’ve got this far.

And to mention we are only in our 20s. Our friends of similar age say they have sex multiple times a week atleast!

It’s not an “off chance” it’s a medical issue, it’s DEFINITELY a medical issue. And he needs to go and get it sorted!

gamerchick · 27/09/2026 17:56

I think I'd be put off if I was under the kind of pressure you're putting out there OP. You're not being very kind to him really

He obviously needs to see a doctor for a possible medical issue and you need to stop pouring paranoia and pressure over his head.

He really needs to see a doctor.

Thanks commenters , a big part of this is how anxious we both are if the bloods come back fine and what we will do next. The testosterone results should be back in a few days and I’m getting some relief that he has finally took the plunge into getting help after years as he swore blinde for a long time that nothings wrong when evidently there very well could be. Atleast he is accepting a problem on his part instead of denial now

This article may help reassure you both @herenew that it isn’t an uncommon problem

It could be medical, but imo it's far more likely to be psychological, and for what it's worth, it almost certainly has absolutely nothing to do with how you look.

A visit to the GP wouldn't hurt, but my money would be on depression/anxiety.

Honestly, spending time on you, making sure you enjoy yourself, in fun ways, will almost certainly help his confidence, and so help in general.

i definitely think it could be a phycological issue to. He says it’s the pressure of not being able to perform because occasionally it just wouldn’t happen which made him anxious but that obviously doesn’t help. He has low self esteem about himself, I compliment him constantly and reassure him but it’s an inner problem. I don’t think his weight helps as he’s still overweight but has been on a journey for the last year and lost about 6 stone so far. We’ve both joined up to the gym this evening as have heard it can help.. the testosterone results came back also at 12 nmol/L which I believe is borderline low? So he says he’s going to book with the gp. So bloody relieved that he has taken me seriously and really wants to resolve it as it’s been years of back and fourth and him ignoring the issue

It will have nothing to do with what you look like. You are putting too much pressure on him and tying his ED to your self esteem, which will make it harder for him to deal with.

herenew · 27/09/2026 21:46

it didn’t help that he has agreed that he was more attracted to my pre pregnancy body (I’m a bit saggy boobed saggy belly and massive hips now!) , he was worried it might’ve been how I looked so tried porn but had no luck either , that made my mind shift to a me problem

Weight will have a massive impact on both. Mainly self esteem/confidence, but probably general cardio health, too. But it sounds like you're both pulling in the right direction.

OMGDidYouSayThat · 27/09/2026 23:29

I would also say it’s a medical/anxiety led issue, on the subject of how you stop yourself thinking it would be different if he was with someone else, fuck knows i’m having exactly the same thoughts in my relationship, i don’t think you’ll ever know the answer to that.

herenew · 28/09/2026 00:22

@OMGDidYouSayThat I asked him if he thinks it would be different with someone else he said he don’t know because he’s not with someone else 😆 handy lol

It’s a question no partner is going to answer because by saying yes they are basically admitting they don’t fancy you anymore. If it helps i’m in a far worse situation than you are so i know exactly how it feels, i get completely sexually ghosted, i hope your situation improves because you guys are young and should be having loads of fun.
