DP has completely lost interest in sex and intimacy, can this actually come back?

i just turned 21 and have been with my DP (22) for 3.5 years. We’re very close, love each other and generally have a pretty good relationship now, which is why I’m finding this so difficult.
I should probably add some context because our relationship hasn’t always been easy. Earlier in our relationship there were some periods that were pretty unhealthy and, at times, felt borderline abusive. He could be very emotionally explosive and we would get overstimulated a lot as we both have autism. There was a lot of shouting, name-calling, disrespect and lying. Things are considerably better now and he has changed a lot, but I don’t want to pretend that history didn’t happen because I wonder whether it could be relevant.
Over the last year or so, our sex life has gradually disappeared. At first I thought it was just sex, but I’ve realised it’s actually intimacy in general. He very rarely initiates sex, but he also doesn’t really initiate kissing, making out, touching, cuddling in a sexual way etc. It feels like the entire physical side of our relationship has just switched off.
We used to have a much more physical relationship, so this is a huge change for me.
There was a period where we had a contagious skin infection, which obviously meant we couldn’t have sex for around 6 months. During this time we both spoke a lot about how we can’t wait to be able to finally be with each other again… The infection has been gone for around 8 months now, but things haven’t naturally gone back to how they were.
I’ve spoken to him about it several times. He says he still finds me attractive and that he does want things to improve, but his explanation is basically that he got used to not having sex and that his “body and brain” have become accustomed to not doing it. He says he doesn’t really have anything else to say about it.
The confusing part is that I’m not just asking why we aren’t having sex. I’m trying to understand why he seems to have lost the desire for physical intimacy altogether.
I’ve told him how much this affects me and how unwanted it makes me feel. We’ve had conversations where he has said he wants to rebuild things, but then very little actually changes afterwards.
I’m not expecting constant sex or for him to force himself to do anything he doesn’t want to. I just miss feeling desired by my partner and having that natural physical connection.
Has anyone experienced something similar where a long period without sex genuinely seemed to switch off their desire for their partner? If so, did it actually come back?
And given our history, could the previous emotional difficulties in the relationship have affected intimacy even though things are much better now? I’m trying to understand whether this is something that can gradually be rebuilt, or whether something fundamental has changed.
I’d really appreciate perspectives from people who have experienced a similar loss of both sex and general physical affection, particularly after a difficult period in the relationship.

the relationship sounds like more effort than it is worth.

when you are young and don’t have ties you need to consider, is my life better with him? Do I have to make compromises that I’m uncomfortable with? Am I happy and respected? If you aren’t ticking all the boxes you can walk away before you are tied in too deep.

Justaquestionplease · 25/09/2026 12:27

You're 21! Fuck that. Move on and stop wasting your youth on this guy

secretrocker · 25/09/2026 12:34

If you were in your 40s, I'd think of advice.
But at 21?
There's a long life ahead of you - quit and find a more healthy relationship.

grinandslothit · 25/09/2026 12:39

You're not married to him you don't have children with him cut your losses
He probably turned to porn during the time of the skin infection and that's why he's off sex
I can't imagine what he did to give you a skin infection

Absolutely this. What on earth are you doing wasting your time with this one?!

SethAndReubenTooSendGaloshes · 25/09/2026 12:42

You're 21. He's your teenage boyfriend, who has been abusive to you and now doesn't want to shag you. Time to move on if ever there was!

BryceQuinlan · 25/09/2026 12:44

You're allowed to break up with your boyfriend. It's no longer working for you, move on before it starts to damage your confidence!

Onecoginagiantmachine · 25/09/2026 12:49

I have daughters your age op!

Run for the hills would be my advice!

He was controlling in the past and he is controlling now; withdrawal of affection is a control tactic.

This is a massive red flag!

You are young, the world is a big place, you deserve so much better. Please get away from him while you can and whatever you do, don’t have a baby with this man,

One of adult DD’s has ASD so I have taken that in to account. You really don’t want a volatile or controlling relationship moving forward.

Good luck!

PS You don’t need anyone’s “permission” to just leave, walk out of the door! Be careful while you do it and get some support around you as he may not react well. Be safe x

Magicpaintbrush · 25/09/2026 12:49

You cannot live the rest of your life like this.

PermanentTemporary · 25/09/2026 12:52

Oh dear. I’m afraid I don’t remember the details of the guy I was with at 21 but I do remember that getting out of it was a very good idea. Don’t hang about being miserable for too long at your age!

daisyydaisyy · 25/09/2026 12:53

Get rid and find someone else! You’re soooo young.

PremierInnShafter · 25/09/2026 12:55

Yes intimacy and sex can come back - its a frequent problem in LTRs after kids/illness etc but it requires two people to want to work honestly together and put themselves out of their comfort zone for the sake of the others happiness and their relationship.
But you've asked and he's quite happy being celibate, so you're onto a loser there. This is how it will be with him, forever. Potentially 60+ years of this if you stay.

And aside from all that...
You're only 21.
It's only been 3 years.
You describe him as previously borderline abusive (honestly this was the time to go).

It's hard but this relationship has simply run it's course & you're no longer compatible.
Thank him for the good times, learn the lessons from this relationship and say goodbye.

AutisticHouseMove · 25/09/2026 13:00

I’m trying to understand why he seems to have lost the desire for physical intimacy altogether.

He has told you his answer to this his explanation is basically that he got used to not having sex and that his “body and brain” have become accustomed to not doing it.

You are just hoping for a different answer.

Could he get past it? Probably but he'd have to want to and he doesn't seem interested in trying.

You are only 21. You do not have to stay with him just because you have been together for 3 years. Especially as he has been abusive in the past.

This is not a relationship you have to stay in even if it feels comforting and familiar to do so.

In my experience, when I have lost sexual desire for a partner, it has never come back.

TFImBackIn · 25/09/2026 13:01

You have one life, OP. Please don't waste it like this.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 25/09/2026 13:06

He’s probably turned to porn.

@PremierInnShafter has nailed it. This with bells on. Most teenage relationships come to an end and there are usually good reasons they do so. I was with my first love for nearly 3 years but, like you, we were very young and we drifted in the end. Of course, it was hard to imagine life without him at first but that came in time. It's fine and natural for relationships to end and people to part - particularly when you are as young as you are.

So, in summary - this relationship needs to be over. As Premier said - it should have ended when he was abusive. It should certainly end now.

BeetyAxe · 25/09/2026 13:08

Run away. Life is about so much more than this. You deserve better.

Carlou · 29/09/2026 09:13

Honestly... take it from one who knows what this is like....It Doesn't Get Better. Sad but true.

You might find it interesting to read up about Cassandra Syndrome. Mark Hutten has some good videos on YouTube about it. CS is where women end up with physical/mental ill-health caused by the emotional deprivation of being with an autistic partner. His idea is that in the early days of the relationship, the girlfriend is the bloke's special interest, and it looks like they have a good relationship, but that over time, she stops being the special interest and he either reverts to his previous interests, or moves on to new ones, leaving the female partner feeling unwanted and neglected.
