Considering low contact with my mum after her comments about my boyfriend

I need a rant and some perspective. My DM has always been difficult and this has not changed with age. Very opinionated and very, very shallow. Honestly, my teen years were dominated by her constant criticism of my looks and how this reflected on our family. My DF is the opposite and has never spoken to me in such way, although I have no idea if he secretly shares some of her opinions.

I recently introduced my BF and whilst she was more subtle than usual she was still being bitchy and made it clear that she didn't really approve. He had a facial birth defect which was corrected at a young age and whilst you can see that there was some corrective work done it is very subtle and he is very handsome. I knew that she'd be difficult and had asked her to be respectful beforehand but that's obviously the best she could do. He noticed and I could tell that he was uncomfortable but he didn't comment on it and just said that she had seemed nice.

She hadn't been nice, and she was on to me afterwards about how I can do better and the usual talk, what if it's genetic, etc etc. I love this man the way he is and I think I have finally reached the point where I am considering freezing contact with her because I don't want her to ruin things. My only worry is my DF who has never behaved like this and who I'd be punishing too through no fault of his own.

Sorry long post, but it helped to write this down and let go of some of my anger. Not even sure what I'm asking for if I'm honest!

it is through fault of your dads own. He listens to her crap and presumably doesn't shut her up or side with you.

How has your DF reacted when 'D'M has made these comments in front of him. Has he told her they're not appropriate?

She didn't make them in front of him I think because she told me on the phone.

She sounds like an arsehole. I’m sure you can see your dad separately but I’d tell her I want nothing to do with her until she can show people some basic respect and decency.

If your dad condones her ableism (as in judging people on appearance/maybe related to disabilities they can't help), how is this any better than condoning racism?
Ask him why he puts up with it, and say you won't. What if you have kids, and they have a disability that makes them look "bad" in your parent's eyes?

Women like your mother cannot do relationships and so need a willing enabler to help them, step forward your dad. He has failed to protect you from the excesses of his wife’s behaviour and is her enabler . He will in all likelihood continue to choose his wife over you saying something like, “don’t criticise the wife I have chosen”.

Does your dad say to you re your mother, “well you know what she is like” etc. I’d be staying well away from both of them going forward because there is no apology nor any responsibility for their actions. You will need to grieve for the relationship you should have had rather than the one you actually got.

He does say that!
I think the most infuriating thing is that I don't even understand what makes her believe that she/ we are better than anyone else. We are so average that we wouldn't even register to most people. It's insane. I don't think that my DF shares those thoughts but you are right in saying that he facilitates them.

She judges anything - in this case it was (as I had expected and feared) commentary on his condition. Sorry I'm ranting because I'm angry.

Sorry OP but I totally agree that by not calling your mother out on her absolutely damaging and hurtful remarks to you as a teenager he is her enabler. Standing by and listening without doing anything to protect you was shameful.

And her attitude to your bf is appalling.

Please dont put up with this any longer. People don't cut contact with their family without good reason and you have a very compelling reason: to protect yourself, the man you care about , and very importantly any children you may go on to have.

Myfridgeiscool · 25/09/2026 09:13

Yep. I’d go very low contact.
Preserve your mental health.
Strong boundaries.
