I’d love some advice. I’ve thought about therapy but on the whole I live a very happy and stable life and worry dragging all this up again will not be best. I do however feel I need to vocalise a few things and get some opinions on what i went through..

I am 48 year old mum (happily married) and this has been put to bed for years however now my teenage girls are the same age it’s bright up a lot of feelings.

When I was 16 I met this boy, he was friends with mutual friends they were all in their late teens/ early 20 assumed he was the same.
we started dating and fast forward a few months were going out . My parents were very laid back something that now horrifies me. I will say I was a teenager that lacked boundaries & did whatever I liked basically. As time went on this ‘boy’ turned out to be 27 which mum mum didn’t seem fussed with. He was a drug dealer, no one knew and I think my family liked he was very well dressed, drove a very expensive Porsche and told them all he owned multiple businesses. I still can’t get my head around i was 16/17! What on earth did my mum think he had in common with me ??

another few months on and he treated me really badly, would say he’d pick me up from a night out and leave me standing there on the street in the darkness at 2am. I’d say I’ll get a cab and 10 mins would turn to an hour standing there on my own. I’d find girls things in his car, he’d tell me he was interviewing girls for an escort agency he was opening, drove me around to look at expensive houses and say the escort girls are buying this themselves they make so much money, looking back now I have no doubt this is what he was grooming me into. He’d ‘take’ me shopping at designer shops in London yet he’d only buy himself things, making me feel I couldn’t afford anything. He’d take friends on holiday and not me, he was very loving but also quite matter of fact that we wouldn’t be forever. It would break my heart as I was totally in love. Now looking back I can see what the plan was.

Things came to a head when arguments turned into physical fights, I took an overdose twice and each time was asked by MH services are you ok now? And that’s about as far as my care went. I wasn’t ok, I was eventually put on heavy anti depressants and lost a good 3/4 years of my life and I couldn’t get off them. During this time I’d still call him and he’d meet me for sec it was a mess and ruined my teenage years.

There is so much more to this story. Physical fights, sexual stuff no 17 year old should be doing.

It also turning out he’d given me a fake name, I didn’t know him at all. The mutual fiends actually knew very little about him, I don’t know he was actually a high up criminal or someone who was a fantasist - both equally as terrifying. Before it ended we’d have police following us or was this made up and again made to scare me ??

Only recently I have started to think about this ex. It’s like I need to know where he is now. I’m not interested in him in a romantic way but I still live in the same town and feel I need to know where he is what he’s doing, I hate to bump into him, obviously don’t ever bring up his name so can’t even ask mutual friends. I’ve looked on fb and isn’t and nothing. Prison maybe lol. Or Dubai 🙄

My daughters are around the same age and it’s really triggered a lot of memories which are not so nice.

Any advice.. what would you do

I'm M59. He was an abusive man. I'm having to restrain myself from using offensive language.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I would recommend therapy (which I'm having myself, for very different reasons, of course.)

We don't know very much at 16. I certainly didn't, but then I was never vulnerable in the way a 16-year old girl would be. I think the only message I can really give you is that you deserve to be free of this mental burden, 110%.

EDIT: Just to add that I have no psychological qualifications whatsoever, so I'm just recommending therapy because I believe it's helped me. Take time to find a therapist you trust.

Yes he sounds like a Romeo groomer/pimp

HikingHippo · 24/09/2026 17:10

Yes you were groomed. And abused. I'm sorry this happened to you and that you were let down by those who should have protected you.

Its not unusual for this to resurface now your daughters are a similar age, its actually really common. If you are considering looking for some support, id suggest looking for someone who is experienced with grooming/sexual violence rather than a generic counsellor.

It sounds like you've totally turned your life around from the trajectory that it could have been on, and you should be proud of that - its truly admirable

Morecoffeeneedef · 24/09/2026 17:14

Sounds like grooming. Get some specialist support and don't think of looking for this man until you have discussed it with them and made a plan.

This happened to a friend of mine when she was in Year bloody 8!!!!! The local drug dealer took a liking to her and similarly her parents did nothing, she was clearly being abused by him. She was what 12 turning 13? She’d wear polo tops to school (the ones with the high collars you roll) to hide her love bites from him. He’d pick her up outside the school gates. He bought her gifts, make up. She started looking a lot older than her years.

He was a different religion and she talked about converting and then marrying him when she was 16. I don’t know what happened to her, I think I recall the school intervening. Even now like now all these years /decades later I think about what her life must have become. I think he passed her around his friends. It was all majorly fucked up. I’m sorry OP. What you went through was absolutely abusive.

nocoolnamesleft · 24/09/2026 17:24

Definitely grooming. And I suspect he was planning on pimping you out. None of it was your fault. 16 year olds do daft things, and normal decent adults protect them. He groomed you, and your parents who should have protected you colluded in it. You must be pretty amazing to have managed to get out of that situation. And it sounds like if your teenage daughters were preyed upon, you would protect them. So you’re a much better mother than yours was.

Thank you for your kind message. I’m going to see how things go and see if just a blip but thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. It’s been very cathartic to say these things out aloud.

I think be use this guy was well dressed, nicely spoken, drove a nice car it was all seen as I’d managed to get myself a very well heeled successful boyfriend. If he had been a different ethnicity and religion I think something would have been said.

Thank you for your reply

Thank you. Yes there is a lot I don’t allow my children to do that my parents didn’t even question. i agree I think that’s what he wanted, he also knew I wanted to go to university and I’d get student loans, he used to look at how I could invest them in his business. I look at my daughters at 16 and wth !!! It’s like I lived a different life. Thank you for your reply.

Thank you thats really kind. I have definitely turned things around he’s, honestly I think I could write a book about it all 🤣 There is so much more to the story and lot I am truly embarrassed about, no one knows about. It’s honestly only since my children have been teens and lead ‘normal’ teenage lives I’ve realised how different my teen years were. They definitely were not what I’d class as normal typical teen years.
