Am I wrong to leave after years of broken promises and insecurity?

Need some opinion. Please be gentle and do not judge me. Story is in a nutshell without too much detail. A decade ago I met a much older man who promised me the world (child and marriage but I needed to finalise my then separation). I was living on my own, had a very good job/ career and I was thriving. He already had kids but I was vunerable and believed everything he said. I finalised my divorce and he started asking me to invest my settlement money in his house I said ok but in exchange for my name on the deeds, he said no. I lost my good job and started having all sorts of problems, he was relentlessly asking about the money. I had a substantial pot of savings at the time but because we were sharing time between my place and his place (and I had no job) my pot was depleting very quickly, in 15 months my money was gone. After my pot was gone he engineered a situation where he rented out his house and decided that we are moving into another rental. He was paying for it because I had no job. I was at home cooking, cleaning etc and he was very happy with that set up but I very quickly realised I have no pension contributions, no security and no money of my own. If something was to happen to him I would end up homeless. I gently started conversation about the wedding that he promissed me but he started telling me how things are not good between us because I did not want to invest money with him. Admittedly i didn't - but because I know I'd lose it. I spoke to solicitor who said absolutely do not invest with this man ever. This was during covid where I still had difficulties with work, eventually things started picking up, I changed industry etc but I ended up on very little money self employed. He was talking about paying my contributions but never did. Recently I secured a full time job that hopefully will bring security as it is for a stable organisation as much as it can be in this climate. We rent a v expensive place whilst his house stands empty mortgage free and raises in value (no more tenants there). He has been talking about selling it for years but it never happened. We both work 5 days per week but he argues daily that he does not want to share the cleaning or cooking or any housework as he pays for it. For context this man earns in a day what I earn in a month. He is on a v high salary yet complains non stop. He has a mortgage free house, pensions, secuirty. Refused marriage even after promises, refused insurance policy even a decade ago, refused to reverse his vasectomy so we can have the child he promised me. We have not been intimate for 5 years, we do not go on holidays, we do not do anything together as he has no initiative and anything I offer is a 'no'. My friends know he is unpleasant and makes me unhappy so they do not want to socialise with us / only with me. His friends are very much aware how he is and also have been withdrawing contact over the past few years. I do not earn enough at the moment to move out but I already told him it is the most sensible solution as this set up is not sustainable. Even today there si no security and I asked him fi he made any provisions for me since we have been together for a decade, he didn't and doesnt think he should. If I was his wife I'd be safe. In return he said to me that I don't contribute to the household and that my cooking, cleaning, meal prepping, housekeeping is not contribution. I am a lot younger than him and he is only excited if we walk on the street together. I feel he treats me like an arm candy, free future carer and free maid. I told him he is a liar and future faked me to which he responed 'yeah whatever'. I know I must leave but because it is so highly toxic I need some clarity from ladies here. Please be gentle.

What clarity are you looking for exactly? You are 100% right that you must leave. You should be proud of yourself for getting your job ( and financial security) in place. What is your plan for leaving?

It sounds like an emotionally and financially abusive situation. Can you contact women's aid or similar? You need to make a plan and stick to it. Your life will get better 💐

You need to start getting prepared to leave this man. Have you looked at rental places around you and if/ what you can afford? Even a studio flat or flat share to start with, if necessary.

Can you start secretly saving up a deposit ?
Do you have any friends or family who could temporarily give you a place to stay ?

You know you need to leave him, so now is the time for action.

You are not wrong don’t doubt yourself.
Get away. He sounds toxic.

BeenThereBackThen · 13/09/2026 23:24

He is using you amd there is nothing in this relationship for you. He sounds a nasty old man albeit with money.

You have no kids, start saving and move out, no need to waste further years on him.

whippersnapper55 · 13/09/2026 23:26

Of course you should leave. If you are on a low income you may be able to claim certain benefits - go and speak to Citizen's Advice, they can provide information on benefits and housing. Do you have any family you could stay with or who can support you to leave?

Yes it is the doubt that brought me here. Thank you. I have no friends or family in the UK. He relies on that fact. I am looking into renting a large bedroom with en suite to start and put all my stuff in storage. I never lived in a house share as I was married before and then walked into this situation, so I have a lot of so called 'stuff', most nice things collected over the years so I do not want to get rid of them. I always lived in spacious places so it will be a big adjustment for me. My plan is to leave quietly, no argument, no fight. I am planning to move into next pay band and then I should be able to afford living alone.

This relationship is going nowhere. You must get out of this as it certainly isn't making you happy.

OMGDidYouSayThat · 13/09/2026 23:31

Just get out, no one deserves to be used like that, what exactly are you getting out of all this? Presumably the reason you’re not living in his mortgage free house is because it would be harder to get you out with the new laws, this way he can just cancel the rental property and you are out on your ear and he’s free. He doesn’t want you claiming a stake on his property. Go find a better man who will love you and treat you right @opinails

initially he wanted me to live in his house but I did not want to because it was full of his ex wife's stuff and he was reluctant to change anything. He wanted me to live in her shadow there, sleep in their marital bed, use towels she used, theri bedlinen... it was all too much. He keeps this house as a security blanket for his kids.

10 years of future faking, me thinking I am not enough and now I fear ending up homeless. He shrugs his shoulders each time I mention it. Why was I so blind? Why did I believe him? A friend told me to just sit tight and put money away for as long as I can.

What a wanker, it’s not bad advice to save, but if you want to be happy again you need to bite the bullet and go it alone i reckon, go find your happy place x
