Help - partner has depression and spiralling about health diagnosis. How do I help?

My partner has recently been diagnosed with a health condition which requires surgery. The surgery can potentially cause life long complications and debilitating pain but unfortunately it’s necessary.

Understandably he’s not taking the news well at all and he’s been spiralling for days. He won’t listen to me when I say perhaps he should speak to the doctor about how it’s affecting his mental health but he’s the sort of person who thinks he knows best and will read about things for hours and hours until he thinks he’s an expert, but he clearly can’t cope.

I’m just looking for some advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation with their partner and not only how you best support them, but also how to deal with their intense moods and the negative energy. Also how you look after yourself, too because I’m not very good at that either.

I just feel like the happiness in our lives has completely gone. I feel quite alone, my family lives far away and so does his. Recently lost my friends too but that’s another story!

Thanks so much in advance.

It's natural he is going to be depressed and anxious about all this so just accept that. It's only for a season as he comes to terms with it or maybe the fall out won't be as serious as he fears. There is nothing as bad as someone offering solutions when all you want to do is grieve and go through the pain and disappointment. Your home isn't happy because he has had some heartbreaking news. Try and look after yourself in the middle of it all, seeing friends etc. This is obviously going to affect you as well so take time to do your own grieving.
Hopefully bit by bit he will adjust to his new way of being .
