Am I unreasonable to feel I deserve better from my partner?

My partner(I use that word very loosely) and I have been together almost 20 years and have a 4 year old. They are paid VERY well and do barely anything when it comes to looking after me or our child. I am really struggling with how I feel physically and mentally, but they do not seem to care.

I do not feel supported or loved at all and genuinely I really don’t see the point in being here other that for my child. I have tried to talk to them about how I feel but I am constantly told that I am having a go at them and I am looking for a fight. I don’t know what to do and honestly don’t care if I drop dead.

am I being unreasonable by feeling like I deserve better from them?

You’re not being unreasonable. Wanting your partner to actually contribute to parenting, support you when you’re struggling and make you feel loved is a pretty basic expectation of a relationship.

What concerns me most is you saying you genuinely don’t care if you drop dead. Please tell someone in real life how low you’re feeling and speak to your GP or another professional. You deserve support regardless of what happens with your relationship.

And after nearly 20 years, if every attempt to explain how unhappy you are gets turned into “you’re having a go” or “looking for a fight”, I’d stop asking whether you deserve better and start asking whether this relationship is actually giving you any reason to stay.
