What should we expect from our first couples counselling session?

I have applied for couples counselling for my husband and me, and just want a bit of advice on what to expect.
Should we each prepare a spiel of where we think we are within the marriage, or do we just see how it goes with the counsellor asking questions?

I would expect the counsellor to ask you why you've come to couples counselling.

I wouldn't prepare anything as the counsellor will lead you both. But do decide to go straight to the story. Don't try to cover up as that only wastes time. Be open and honest so the counsellor knows whats happening. And prepare yourself to hear what your dh has to say so it won't hit you too hard. Sometimes they give advice at the end only to speak of the difficulties in the session as you can make things worse by having heated discussions about what each of you bring to the session. Remember it takes time and things can get worse before they get better so hang in there.

Yes you will be asked about what brought you there but I don’t think you need to prepare. The counsellor will outline the plan for going forward. Just turn up in good time so you’re not stressed and try to be in a good headspace. You’ll be nervous but try not to be agitated.
