How do you cope emotionally with a sexless marriage when you don’t want to leave (for now)?
I’m mid-40s, married to my husband since we were very young, and we have two secondary-school-age children. We haven’t had sex for around two years.
This isn’t something I’ve only just realised, and I’m not really looking for “LTB”. For various reasons, particularly the children, their schooling and exams, I don’t want to break up the family at this point. We actually function pretty well as a family. There is affection between us — cuddles, hugs, companionship — but there is no sexual intimacy.
Historically I’ve been the more dominant one in our relationship, including sexually, and I think I carried a lot of that side of our relationship. But I don’t want to do that anymore. I don’t want to initiate and drive everything. I want to feel that my husband actually desires me and comes towards me.
Something brought it home to me recently. We spent time with another couple and the wife is a very strong, dominant, successful woman and the main breadwinner. But her husband is clearly sexually attracted to her. She casually talked about things that turn her on, kissed him, mentioned him always touching her bum etc. Nothing outrageous — just an obvious sexual connection between them.
It really affected me. Not because I want her husband or necessarily want their marriage, but because I realised how much I miss being wanted. Seeing that she can be a strong, dominant woman and still have a husband who pursues and desires her also challenged something in me. I think I’ve always had some fear that allowing a man to be sexually dominant would somehow mean being controlled by him. Seeing them made me realise those things aren’t necessarily connected.
I also have a child with additional needs and life has been exhausting and stressful for a long time, so I can see how we’ve ended up letting years pass while dealing with everything else.
But underneath all of that, I feel profoundly rejected. Sometimes I look at other women whose husbands obviously desire them and feel “less than”. I hate that because rationally I know my worth isn’t determined by whether my husband wants sex with me, but emotionally it really hurts.
I have friends, a career and interests. I go to the theatre, have been going to the gym and intend to get back to it, and I’m trying to invest more in myself. So I’m not really looking for advice just to “get a hobby” or keep busy. I can have a full day and still come home and feel the absence of being desired.
I’m also not asking how to change or fix my husband. I’m increasingly aware that I can’t, and I’m not even sure I want to spend my energy trying.
What I’d really like to hear from women who’ve been in this position is: if you stayed, at least for a period of time, how did you protect your confidence and sense of yourself as a woman? How did you cope with the loneliness and longing without constantly feeling rejected?
And did you eventually reach a point where you knew what you wanted longer term?

I worked out the other day that it's been 8 years since I had sex with my husband. We've been together 22 years. He always had a much lower drive than me and he struggled with ED, depression, anxiety. He has zero self-esteem and thinks he is "replusive". He is not, he is very attractive. I was surprised the first time we had sex as it was over in seconds. He says he just doesn't ever feel like it. He never even masturbates. I told him I think he is asexual. We have one child and are a great team in all other ways. I asked him the other day if he would mind if I had sex with another man because I still want to have sex but he doesn't want to have sex with me. He said he would not like that at all. I've no idea how it will turn out once our son moves out, which won't be for another 7 years at least. I have lots of sex toys and write erotica. I was hoping that my drive would go down now I'm in menopause, but it's still thriving!

I know it’s a silly comparison, but what your DH said sounds a bit like, “I don’t want to ever play tennis with you again, but I would not like it at all if you play tennis with someone else. You need to give up tennis for the rest of your life.”

(And I agree—he sounds asexual.)

I’ve spoken to one friend who said she absolutely isn’t interested in sex with her husband and she doesn’t know if he still is interested but they no longer have sex. Another friend who hasn’t slept with her husband in years but for different reasons - his behaviour mainly like drinking etc.

but I don’t know we are a good team, we think similarly on most things. Share the same values when it comes to our kids, we have different taste in music, some slightly different political views but nothing that is too dramatic. We love the same things, we make a great team around the house.

he absolutely adores the kids and does so much with them. He takes the lead on planning our holidays etc.

He listens to me generally to my ideas and we come up with things together. He’s not controlling at all bar his OCD at times . But honestly I just leave him to it, I just miss that intimacy.

Do you feel like he’s your flatmate?

SEXLESSMARRIAGE2 · 30/08/2026 17:16

Yep @CowTown he is loving and caring in lots of ways but not sexually at all. It's just not there. He just says, I just never think about it and I don't know what's wrong with me, I don't deserve you etc. I used to cry and get angry about it but I am resigned to it now. I either put up with it or leave. I do not want to only be with my child 50% of the time so for now, I just put up with it and masturbate daily and write sex stories as my outlet, OP.

Annecy1980 · 30/08/2026 17:46

CowTown · 30/08/2026 17:14

Do you feel like he’s your flatmate?

No because I don’t love and care for a flatmate like I love and care for him. I want us to succeed and be together I don’t want to be without him and I don’t want him to have anyone else.

I’m writing this as a male in exactly the same situation as you, except i’ve clocked up 5 years of not ‘feeling wanted’ and this is the key, it’s not actually about the physical side of things, it’s about knowing whether someone actually still wants you, and usually if you have a strong physical relationship that tells you they do. Or at least you hope it does…

In the absence of the physical stuff how are you supposed to know? And if you raise it as an issue and they come towards you, how do you know it’s real? My partner still gives me those little touches on the back and hand holds and says she loves me, i don’t put any pressure on her for anything physical anymore as the rejection just fucks with your mental health, for the last 5 years i haven’t even attempted to get close really, i just respect the fact that she doesn’t seem interested and that’s her choice.

I have no answers, all i know is that like you, i adore my little family unit and it hurts like hell to think that the person you chose to share your life with may not look at you in the same way you look at them anymore. I can’t say whether i would trade the happiness of my kids for my own need to feel wanted again or not, right now i definitely wouldn’t, but on the flip side am i ready to be a monk for the next 20 years either, i can’t answer that. I feel your pain.

BuildingAccess · 31/08/2026 02:59

I get it, OP and I am sorry you, myself and many of us are in similar spaces. DH and I have been together a long time, had DC and in a few years we went from meeting in the middle to it being one-sided, similar to you. I lead in everything including sexual advances and it’s utterly exhausting working full time, taking care of the house, taking care of him. It’s always one-sided. I never can be the vulnerable one who comes home for a cuddle and a cup of tea. I have to problem-solve and hold back emotions otherwise he is uncomfortable with expressions of sadness or anger and holds back even more deliberately. It is a lonely marriage.

I came to realise I will take it day by day. I don’t want to break up our family unit as DC is my main priority. I think I’ve accepted what it is as I know I could put my hand on my heart and know I’ve done absolutely everything to be the ideal partner.

What has he said when you talked to him about it?

My husband insisted that he still wanted me. But his actions said differently. I asked him what was going on with him and us, and what I could do to make things better. He said, I don’t know. That was his answer for years. It turned out that he was addicted to online porn. None of the emotional investment in intimacy required. Finally, we spent three days talking about it. Ultimately, he said he wasn’t attracted to me anymore because we have two children and a mortgage. My self esteem had been killed by the time I learned it wasn’t my fault (I’d always assumed it was) it was his immaturity and being on the Autism Spectrum. He was and is affectionate in non-sexual ways. Although I had talked to him many times how deeply he hurt me, he still doesn’t really get it.
some years back at a professional conference, I met a man with whom I had a lot in common. We enjoyed each other and had a connection. He wanted sexual intimacy with me. Maybe I should have acted on it, but I didn’t. Now, I think of it, I wish I had.
I have no advice to offer you, OP, I can only say that, yes, I know what it’s like. I hope someone on here can help you.

DH has low testosterone. The doctor advised a supplement. One of the possible side effects was hair loss. He said he would rather never have sex again than lose his hair, and we haven’t had sex in eight years. He just doesn’t seem interested although I bet he would be able to get it up for Julia Robert’s.

QueenOfTheWasps · 31/08/2026 06:57

Oh and he also said he doesn’t want me to have sex with anyone else. I said he has no right to say that to me, given his stance.

I was in pretty much this situation and it ultimately ended my marriage. My self esteem was at rock bottom and I viewed it as my fault as he didn't fancy me.

Turns out I was very wrong and I very much enjoyed being single! I now have my DP and we have compatible drives. Me and exH amicably coparent the DCs our marriage at the end was just 2 friends living together.

MsPrufrockk · 31/08/2026 07:55

To answer your question, I couldn't/wouldn't want to cope in a sexless relationship. But as you've said you won't leave and he obviously refuses to talk to you about it, I hope you find a way of coping - you've got the rest of your life to live with no intimacy.

@Artnedothow old were your children? With a 15 and 12 year old (12 year old with additional needs) I think he would really struggle with the 12 year old … he doesn’t get the nuances of her needs sometimes … clearly with the 15 year old it’s exams coming up so I’m not blowing up the family in fact I don’t want to

DCs were 12, 10 and 8 when my marriage ended.

You'd be surprised how resilient kids can be. They coped incredibly well with the divorce and 2 of them are ND one with quite challenging needs.
ExH doesnt always get the nuances of dealing with those challenges.

I'm not saying you have to divorce. I did many more years without sex, than you before it all blew up. I really tried for years to just put up with it, suggested counselling etc but nothing worked as he was getting his kicks online leaving me believe it was my fault.

PeppyTealDuck · 31/08/2026 11:34

Many people cope by not equating their self worth with sex, and taking it as one of life’s frustrations that however aren’t the end of the world. Of course it takes adjustment and some selflessness.

Being with a person always involves compromises. It sounds like you either accept you need to initiate (the compromise) or there will be no sex with your husband.

I read about this often on mumsnet, and so I asked my large group of 40-something mum friends when we were out last for drinks. Average was twice a year sex. That blew my mind, as someone who thought less than twice a week was not enough (especially not for my husband)... I'm not sure what to think now!

Wow. Is this because they don't want it or their husbands don't want it? I've found the latter to be far more rare and really very damaging for the woman's self esteem....

I’m male - but was you in my marriage, I was the one who wanted sex and initiated etc ,
once I stopped ( mostly due to rejection from her and a health condition for me) the sex and intimacy stopped and the relationship turned into flatmates not lovers And that’s probably where you are now, and eventually we split

it’s probably too late to change his sexual “orientation “ but maybe you could adjust it a bit
maybe you initiate to begin with but then try to get him to take control

I had lots of rejection in marriage and it knocked my confidence for six, you might be married to someone who has no sexual self confidence any more

LochSunart · 29/09/2026 16:56

You ask some questions at the end of your post but, as you asked them to women and I'm M59, I won't answer them. However, you've expressed yourself really well and I think a lot of people in sexless marriages feel the same. What you say about dominant women is really interesting; I wouldn't describe my wife as dominant but, when I met, she was coming to the end of a hard-headed, corporate career. Shortly after we met, she left that world, then tried to take her own life - I'm sure the two are connected - but she did carry this dominant corporate mentality for quite a few years after that.
