What are the real statistics for infidelity in marriage?

It is reported that maybe up to 25% of marriages experience infidelity but it is obviously difficult to come up with an exact figure. I feel thr figure is very much an underestimate; would you agree?

Yes, I would definitely believe it’s higher than that.

I kind of feel your in a minority if there is no form of cheating at all?

I’m not sure the true statistic will ever be known.

Many people are unfaithful in marriages and it’s never found out.

Also now you can opt for a no fault divorce you know longer have to declare the reason for a marriage breakdown even if it is due to infidelity (What happened with mine!)

i recently read that what skews statistics is that persons who cheat often do so repeatedly.
one person unfaithful during five separate relationships.

I believe it’s much higher than 25%. I imagine many who cheat aren’t found out at least that’s what I have experienced as I know/have known men & women I work with openly admitting to cheating & most of them get away with it. I would suggest as high as 40%

Omg how sobering and demoralising too

MrsLFii · 29/08/2026 15:02

It probably is higher than 25% but it’s impossible to ever know. There’s too many variables and unknowns. The main one, I think, being really what constitutes cheating, where’s the line between ‘just’ inappropriate and actual cheating? What one person may consider cheating another may not etc. Also, people are never going to be 100% honest so there’s literally no way of ever knowing.

In the marriages I know it seems to be lower than 25%. Of course I realise that I might not know about some situations.

FrankAbagnalesLies · 29/08/2026 15:05

It's likely higher. But I guess it all depends on what counts as infidelity.

Summerlovingtheraspberries · 29/08/2026 15:07

Difficult to know.
Plenty of married men visit prostituted women.
Plenty of married people of both sexes cheat, many don’t.
I know of several married people who are still together despite their oh cheating.
I know lots of long term marrieds who seem very happy too.
