I’m looking for peoples insights or experience. DH and I have been married for 7 years known each other for 11. We have two DC, almost 3&5.
Our early relationship was one built on shared enjoyment of travel and nice things. We had lots of trips away and ate out a lot. DH was flying high in his career and we had plenty of money for such frivolity. We had genuinely great times together.
Fast forward and DH career has stalled as a result of bad managers and bad luck and we are not in position financially to enjoy the good life as we did before. I have reduced my hours because of the extortionate cost of childcare in our area. We of course have our DC which has also (happily) diverted a lot of our income and has obviously massively reduced our ability to go out and have trips away. The end result of this is we cannot enjoy the things we used to.
DC 5 is a terrible sleeper and has woken almost every night since birth. I have given in to him looking for me because of the complete exhaustion that has resulted in bringing him back to his own bed multiple times a night. DC3 is a much better sleeper but wants to sleep in our bed. As it stands DH sleeps with DC3 and I sleep in the spare room and DC5 will come to me during the night.
DH has become very down about his career not having taken off in the way he had hoped or expected. I do feel for him as he did genuinely get the short straw on more than a couple of occasions but this has led him to become incredibly resentful and he quite often mopes around feeling sorry for himself. This has gone on for years now. He is incredibly untidy and messy and I have found myself very resentful of him, the mess he creates and often feel like it is like having another child to tidy up after. I have brought this up several times but nothing changes. The extent of this messiness is extreme, think trail of destruction follows him.
We are essentially like house mates at this point. He sleeps in one room, I in another. We are very very rarely intimate maybe once a year. After DC go to bed we sit on the couch and scroll or watch tv for an hour. Then retire to our seperate rooms. I’m quite happy in my own room. There is no real affection between us.
Im not sure if this is just a phase as a result of life’s pressures/babies/lack of sleep or are we in deeper trouble. Has anyone had experience of this? Did you come out the other side?
