How did you feel when your child got married?

My daughter gets married this week and while I’m really happy for her and like her fiancé I’m feeling a bit weird about it. I know I’m not ‘losing her’ as such as she’s not a possession and I know we’ll remain close but I feel a whole range of emotions in addition to being quite stressed about the actual day. Part of me just wants it to be over 😳

I felt that my family was growing when my son got married .

A very sad day for us, as our child has married a partner with mental health and personality issues. The future does not look bright.

Two of my kids have got married recently and I feel very relaxed and happy about it. I really like their spouses. Im not particularly into marriage and wouldn’t have cared if they didn’t get married but I’m happy because they are.

Excited
Happy
Looking forward to it, and enjoyed chatting about the plans
On the day, relaxed and so happy.
Delighted to see my dc marrying the person they truly love
Delighted our family was growing, and the new member of our family is so lovely.
Quite emotional knowing that my parents would have loved to have seen my dc grow up to be such fine adults
Proud of the young adults dc have become
Emotional and incredibly happy to see them surrounded by such good friends (both his and her friendship groups) and by close, loving families.

Very proud and happy on the day DC was married.

Just me with the mixed emotions then - I’m surprised, honestly thought others might feel similar.

That doesn’t sound good @StripyShirt 🙁

It’s hard to see your child making a difficult choice for themselves and knowing there’s nothing you can do about it Flowers

Does she live near you @ProfessorofDarkArts? Will anything physically change when she moves?

Traceyatnumber32isaloudgobshite · 24/08/2026 06:29

I havnt got to this stage yet but I think i can understand how you feel.
It the end of an era.
Both my dc live away. My eldest 5 hours away. She recently purchased her first home there with her partner (its where her partner grew up) and although I already knew deep down, them moving any closer to here would never happen, I do feel a bit bereft at the same time as being incredibly proud of her and happy that she is.
I've never mentioned it before to any one and its wierd and hard to put into words.

ProfessorofDarkArts · 24/08/2026 06:30

About 1/2 hour away. I don’t expect anything to change but it just feels huge. I’m not in a great place at the moment though so I think I’m making more of it than I would normally. She doesn’t know any of this as I realise it’s completely my issue.

I had two get married within five months last year. I was nervous that the wedding would
go well and people would enjoy themselves. I couldn’t have asked for
more, they were brilliant days and I was very happy. I am happy they’re happy with great partners.
