Should I speak to my former best friend after ghosting her?

I ghosted my best friend 5 years ago as she was on the defense for no reason and called me lazy with the emphasis on the word lazy for not working. It really upset me as I was in pain after a virus and couldn’t work and she judged.

She sent a birthday card and Christmas card a few weeks later and I never responded. I know I should have told her but my mental health was in a bad place.

In December 2025 I messaged her as her old best friend she fell out with at school had died. She said thanks for letting me know and I said ok and that was it.

Tomorrow she is at a local open history day and will have a stand promoting her art and face painting. Should I try and speak to her? I have dreamt about her lately. I miss her at times but she might reject me or be nasty. Or if she does want to make up I risk being disrespected again as it wasn’t the first occasion she had done this.

I have posted about her before and got mixed responses.

Thanks..

She doesn’t sound like she was much of a friend - friends don’t call each other lazy when one is ill - that is horrible.

You miss her but it’s unlikely she will have changed.

Leaving aside whether you should try to restart this relationship, don't just ambush her while she's working.

Mamy friendships don't last a life time and even good friendships fizzle out through change in circumstances or just become exhausted. I think your previous olive branch was not taken up. It's entirely up to you whether you value this person to risk another go at reconnecting , but I think the ball is in her court.

Don't let intrusive thoughts about what might have been different had X or y not happened pray on your mind . I would let the friendship remain a past one, unless she's bothered enough to reach out to you. Concentrate your efforts on making new friends

I agree she is horrible. She was very cruel. I have never been called lazy by anyone in my life. People know I am not that.

You are right, she won’t have changed. She has fallen out with others since so I suspect they got poor treatment too.
