Husband arranged nine children sleeping over without telling me how many he had confirmed

Just going to start by saying I don't want this on SM if that counts for anything.

I have another thread about dh under a different username.

My son had a party thus week. Week day. Dh arranged it all for a working day for him. I knew there would be some staying for a sleepover. What I didn't know until a hour before the party started was there was 9 staying over out of 15 for the party.

We have four kids and his mil staying for the week. So was 16 people in the house overnight. There wasn't room for more than 3 in the living room and we have a four foot square coffee table in the middle. Not breakfast enough breakfast food in to feed them either.

I was angry with dh and asked why he hadn't told me about the number of kids for the sleep over.

He has said

"I told ds and I thought that he would tell you" l pointed out to him that DS is only 10 years old he then said that he did tell me which is a common gaslighting tactic from him. I said to him you couldn't have possibly tell me because I would remember if I had nine children staying over needing to be fed. I wouldn't have half a pack of corn flakes to feed them with. I'm not that stupid. he then changed the story and said that him and DS had discussed it and it all been arranged they didn't see any point in letting me know there was no way that he was going to say to me that it was an oversight and then maybe couldn't possibly cope or cater for many children.

He hasn't asked me once how it went. Was up to 1am ( I left everything for him to put straight) but has not hoovered the living room or put it straight. Hasn't put the kitchen back as its normally set out. I did a fry up for 13 for breakfast.

His mum lives in Asia and she has come for a rare week to see him. He had 6 days of leave left when he sorted her dates. Then he booked that week off to not coincidence with her visit.

He can not see any reason why this is off or his communication is shit. It's like I have to explicitly ask him questions to things I don't know exist. Yes let's have a sleepover but sane person invites 9 kids to sleep on a living room floor 8 foot by ten with 8sq foot off that being taken up by a coffee table? Doesn't move the table that's too heavy for me alone and doesn't consider the kids might need breakfast.

Anything that I say "why didn't you tell me?" He insists he has. But you remember this sort if thing wouldn't you? If you sane with half a brain cell. I'm 1000% sure he didn't tell me. But why? To wind me up? What is his motive unless it genuinely doesn't occur to him that the 6 other people sleeping in the house might need to know 9 other people are staying? Do we? Or is it normal to not need to know? His gaslighting is making me doubt my sanity

Does he have any redeeming festures? He sounds awful. I am sorry for you OP. He is clearly deliberately making your life difficult.

StandingDeskDisco · 07/08/2026 15:21

It didn't occur to him to tell you, because he is self-absorbed and self-centred. If it doesn't affect him, it doesn't matter.
It didn't affect him: he had his own bed, and didn't have to think about breakfast.

When challenged afterwards, he prefers to lie and pretend he did tell you, because he is so immature and egocentric, so he cannot admit being 'in the wrong'. Like a 4-year old saying "It wasn't me" when caught red handed.

Up to you whether you decide to stay married to him. But if you do stay, don't think you can change him. People don't change. If he is immature and selfish now, that is how it will stay.

Right now? No. He isn't the man I married

He is progressively worse. He definitely can not improve as he can not admit to any faults therefore there's zero room for self reflection. I'm taking bets on how long it will take him to rearrange how the living was and vacuum the floor. 1 million on never.

While all the kids rave about what a cool dad he is. No sane parent would ever agree to such a massive sleep over.

He's a lazy neglectful twat at best but I suspect there is more to it, like deliberately wrongfooting you so that he looks like cool Dad of the Year and you are made to be bad mummy.

SleepOverShenanigans · 07/08/2026 17:35

Yes I'm definitely always the one making the "fuss" or starting arguments when he has been the twat and just doesn't react at all if I get upset about the fallout.

I'm going to rise to his level and never tell him anything then give him the "I have told you this multiple times. You did know. We talked about it and you agreed".

Another favorite is "I didn't tell you because I didn't want to worry you" up to and including my mum being burgled which he got my sister and mum to hide from me. Probably not to protect me but to shut me down from talking about it and protect his peace.

Tempted to get divorce papers right now then do the whole "we discussed this at lenght so not sure why surprised what's come in the post" 😂

That sounds like a great idea

SleepOverShenanigans · 09/08/2026 10:27

He hasn't put the rooms back to how they normally are after I moved things to accommodate the sleepover.

So do I just leave it or ask him to move it back? I thought he would move things when they became inconvenient for him, but it seems not.

I think you are going to have to put your foot down and tell him to move it all back. He is waiting for you to sort it out.

chirrupybird · 09/08/2026 10:40

Perhaps he just has supreme confidence in you being able to cope no matter what is thrown at you. Slightly joking, but it may not have occurred to him that you wouldn't be able to manage your kids, a 9 child sleepover and a visitor in a small house.

And tell him to put the room back and hoover. Did the kids enjoy themselves?

SleepOverShenanigans · 09/08/2026 11:49

Kids had an amazing time and I did cope quite easily. All the kids think dh is amazing fun and the best dad.

I however think he is a twat who seems to think I'm a Non playing character in his life.

Arrange another activity when you are busy and leave him to it. Tell him he agreed to it
