I’ve been chatting to someone recently that lives 1 hr 30 mins away from me..

he’s been to see my 5 times, we get on so well, was thinking bout maybe going to see him next time just wondering other people’s opinions on this ? I’m not sure if it would work or not 😬

I'm from the Highlands and that's a pretty normal distance here if you do online dating because the population is more sparse and therefore the pool is smaller.

I think the more important thing is a reasonably early discussion about where it could go long term. At least one of you needs to be theoretically able and willing to relocate for the right person in the future. If neither of you can, don't pursue it.

Dh and I lived an 11 hour flight from each other for 2 of the 3 years we were dating. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1.5 hours is about the distance I drive to my hospital appointments a few times a month, so doesn’t seem long at all.

Personally I reduced my search radius on online dating to about 20 miles away as I knew I wasn’t prepared to move away from my home area despite the app telling me this was too narrow! I did meet my DH quite quickly and it all worked out. Everyone is different in terms of what they’re prepared to compromise on. I think that’s the key thing you need to ask yourself about this - I would have preferred to meet someone who hadn’t previously been married but this is one thing I compromised on with DH. I also compromised on age as there’s slightly more of an age gap than I would have liked. As well as location I also didn’t want to compromise on already having children.

My ex was in Australia and I'm in the UK, 1.5 hours is nothing

dscugie · 29/07/2026 09:24

Why is he doing all travel? If you are just ‘thinking’ about making the effort next time when he has done it 5 times already it sounds like the distance is too far for you.

How many miles
away?

Hito · 29/07/2026 12:15

Half way is 45 minutes

favmlfub · 29/07/2026 12:20

My ex lived that distance away, I didn’t think it was that far. We live in London but opposite ends

exexpat · 29/07/2026 12:21

That depends on so many things, but mainly family and work commitments for both of you, which affects how much free time you have to travel, and whether you can spend time at each other's houses. My current relationship started with us living more than a 4-hour drive apart, but we were at a life stage where we could be very flexible.

If you are older and no longer have young children at home (or are younger but don't yet have children) then I would say that distance is no problem if you can both afford to travel. But if you would be juggling work and childcare, it will probably end up being too much.

I'm 2.5 hours away from mine (we met on holiday) its not a problem but he does most of the travelling as hes self employed and can work around the hours

Sunshineismyhappy · 29/07/2026 16:35

@UpDownAllAround1

it’s 63 miles.
