i am 55 with two older teenage children. .
I don’t know where to start.
i have only had one partner for 35 years .
i cared for my dad for the last 14years in my home. I have just recently gone back to work after my dad died.
i just don’t want to be on my own but i am worried about finding a new person

Of course not, plenty of us have met partners later in life, whether it’s a first husband or subsequent partner. There aren’t huge droves of eligible men at this age, but if you’re reasonably sociable and open to meeting someone regardless of their height, age, income etc then you’ll be able to find plenty of men to date.

Some of my friends are more fixed in their expectations and rule out lots of decent men before they even get to a date, so open your mind and your diary and get to it!

And I’m sorry about your dad, it must be a huge adjustment after spending so much of your time and energy caring for him. Now is your time though, so do whatever makes you happy and that doesn’t need to include a man, but if it does, make sure he’s adding to your life not just being someone else for you to take care of. Sorry about your dad OP.

In my experience, nearly all decent men have been taken by 30, much less 55!

The single women in my 50’s I know find it easy to meet ‘someone’. But most of them don’t want to compromise. For example a lot of them want to start enjoying travel, but don’t want to be financially responsible for a new partner who can’t afford to. Hating myself for sounding cynical but the ones with money get snapped up. And I’m sure it works the other way round too.

Maybe you didn’t need to comment?

OP, my aunt met the love of her life in her 60’s

We have been discussing dating at different ages in another thread on here. Things change over time and, stereotyping, for different age groups.

You've spent thirty-five years taking care of other people. Before you look for someone new, spend maybe six months taking care of yourself. Learn what you like for dinner when no one else's preferences matter. Find out what your weekends look like when they're yours. All that sort of thing. I suspect that the right man at this age isn't looking for a nurse or a project. He's looking for a woman who knows who she is.

It’s never too late, there is someone out there for everyone, go find yours!

Plenty of men who are in relationships at 30 will end up single again later in life, whether through divorce or bereavement.

It's never too late. in fact it's exciting, amusing, annoying and frustrating all at the same time on the dating scene.
My advice is take a nonchalant approach and have fun, don't take it too seriously until there is chemistry and spark. And even then tread cautiously.

I’m much older than you, and I’ve met a lovely man after being widowed. Also a widower. We met by fluke, and we’ve got a great relationship. Neither of us want 24/7 but it works well for us.

6namechange3 · 29/07/2026 09:51

I think it's easier to find men in your 50s than in your 30s. A lot of people I know are coming to the end of long relationships or bereaved. I have had plenty of offers/ flings and one year long relationship since my marriage ended 3 years ago. The men I have been involved with have all been lovely but I think compromise at my age is hard and I seem to be settling to preferring being single. I haven't used dating apps yet, just have a wide circle of friends through my slightly male dominated hobbies. I would like a partner but I don't want to change my life very much!

I’m 60 and after choosing to be single donkeys years I started online dating a year or so ago
I am now with someone really nice but I spent an awful lot of time messaging etc and met 12 men over the course of a year all ultimately unsuitable. My one thought is I realised quite fast I needed to get off my high horse and be far more open minded or I would remain single. For me I enjoyed that year warts and all but yes you will meet someone if you are prepared to stick at it

hahabahbag · 29/07/2026 16:39

I met dh later in life, there’s good ones out there. Anecdotally there is a bit of a partner shuffle from mid 40’s onwards, people who are bored of each other rather than fundamentally bad relationships, so there’s definitely quite a few men “on the market” wasn’t a shortage when I was dating though unfortunately I seemed to already know most of the men the algorithm matched me to via my dcs friends! (Dh lived in a different city)

My brother was widowed in his 50s and has met someone lovely. She's divorced They've both got grown up kids and grandchildren. They've been together 9/10 years now and very happy. They met through a mutual friend.

One of my best friends got together with her partner in her late 50s. Through a dance class.

Getting together later in life has meant challenges about will, health issues, houses.

But to answer your question, there are people who get together happily later in life.
