Drink fuelled insecure texting broke the relationship

If a boyfriend sends drink fuelled texts at night every so often, expressing insecure feelings, disappointment at not seeing eachother enough, despite various lovely weekends away together, questioning my feelings, commitment, seriousness etc, should they be surprised I finished it to focus on my kids for a bit thank you very much??!
He still wants me back, last time I checked messages.
Lots of great important things in common, and kind, honest etc, but really, I couldn't take it any more!
Together over a year, but stop start from my point of view, because of these late night texts and also day time questioning messages as follow ups. The gifting got a bit out of control too.
All got too intense! But I'm still sad.

You did absolutely the right thing. I couldn't tolerate that level of neediness.

Sounds potentially like it would escalate into something much more controlling and sinister. Yes you were right to end it

The drinking sounds problematic too tbh.
It sounds like you’ve done the right thing.

That was the main thing I became concerned about early on but overlooked it a bit as his lifestyle, then realised I was right to be worried, annoyed about it.
The cost was one irritating thing, (given I have to be careful with money) and the side effects of making him unpredictable enough, along with the neediness, and it feeding his feelings and general low mood he probably tried to hide at times, it got too much really.
Everybody thought he seemed lovely, family met him briefly, due to geography, but most understood why I finished it.

I don't think being 'friends' will help either of us.
