Am i wrong in feeling this way?

I've been with my partner for nearly 20 years, we are mid 30s and have 4 children age range 18 to 5. I feel a constant ache for more and to experience a connection with someone else, or just to feel at peace and not so stressed. Partner is selfish, he barely gives me any money, I'm lucky if he gives me £500 a month, I work part time he is a self employed builder so earns more than me. Although he does pay gor holidays and the odd takeaway when we have one but thats beside the point. I see to the children mostly, sort their things, appointments, he's never been to a parents evenings or school play/sports day, pick ups and drop offs is mostly me but he does if he's in the mood, most nights he goes to walk the dogs where he usually ends up at a quiet pub with his friends and I'm left to sort the washing up, the little one and pick my daughter up if shes been out with friends. When I go to work and am out the house for 13 hours I come home to barely anything done, he refuses to do any washing as he says hes not sorting through our dirty knickers, moams at me when i've not washed his work clothes, washing up is usually left, bathroom never cleaned, he says the elder children should do it, which I agree but so should he, and they will if they're told. He is emotionally unavailable, he's difficult to get a conversation out of him and has no sense of humour, I find I am not my true self with him as I feel stupid. Many many times over the years I have tried to talk to him about how I feel and tried to raise the issues I have but he doesnt listen, he becomes argumentative and turns things round on me and says I'm in a mood then we just go round in circles, we're fine for a bit then I get fed up and try to tell him his wrongs and how I feel etc but nothing works. I have no where to go so I cannot leave, no family only my grandparents and I certainly wouldnt mither them. I had a one night stand with someone we both know many years ago and he has never gotten over it, he cant understand why i did it, he was suicidal when he found out and still says now if he ever hears anything else he will kill himself and I feel he would feel this way if i did break it off completely and that worries me. He has his good points believe it or not, everyone I speak to say hes a good bloke, he's always been faithful, we do nice things together as a family, the sex is good and I've told him thats probably the only good thing going for us. I've had to have time off work due to stress and burnout with other things going on and couldn't cope with everything. I crave an emotional connection with someone else, I feel now I'm in my mid 30s I want to live and not waste my life feeling miserable and disrespected but I feel completely stuck and obviously dont know any different hence why I've put up with this for so long. Any advice/thoughts welcome, please be kind!

Sounds like he has never forgiven you for cheating. But he should behave towards you like he does all these years later. If he can’t forgive and move on, he should leave and not treat you like he is

He's never forgiven me and to my surprise it absolutely crushed him when he found out. I've never seen him in such a state. Even now he has panic attacks. But as you can see by the post I had many reasons.m as hes never been any different. Yet hasnt changed his ways and doesnt appreciate me

He's financially and emotionally abusive, OP.

You could speak to Women's Aid or local domestic abuse services about how to get out.

Is your home private rental or social housing? If the latter, your HA have a duty of care to you and may be able to help.

Rented HA. I love my home and where i live and its ideal for the children they can play out safely, close to the schools. I dont want to leave when its him who's the problem

If you rent through a housing association that might be a good place to start. Have you considered making an appointment with your housing officer to discuss the situation?

Yup this is abuse. I’m in a similar position - married 20yrs in my late 40’s and wished I had recognised his traits of being a narcissist sooner. I was exhausted from trying to get him to see my point of view but he would always turn it around on me and label me the crazy one. For a long time I believed I was the one to blame. I’m now in the process of instructing solicitors and have contacted a domestic abuse charity to help me get out safely and not get dragged back into all the love bombing and/or him behaving like the victim. Again comes across as a humble nice guy, but has nothing going for him.

Seriously do your research and plan an exit. Get in touch with Women’s aid or if you’re in the south east try Oasis Charity. Abuse doesn’t always mean physical bruises. Sometimes the most damaging type of abuse is psychological and emotional. Him threatening to kill himself is emotional coercive control. It’ll only get worse as they get older. Find your piece of happiness while you’re still young. It’ll be the hardest thing you do, but you will thank yourself in time for being brave. Good luck OP, I hope you find freedom.

The one-night stand is just a stick to beat you with, many years later.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 20/07/2026 19:24

He does not have to hit you to hurt you and he is not emotionally safe enough. What he is doing now is wielding his power and control over you and in the your kids by being verbally and financially abusive. He is not going to leave quietly if at all because if he does he will then have to find another woman and he’s too lazy to do that.

Your house is akin to a war zone where he has decided to embark on his own private based war against you.

I cant stand the fact he still brings it up, even if it did devastate him. I had my reasons. I agree and he makes sure he makes me feel disgusting for it

Going to write him a letter because I'm done with talking and not being listened to

It won't make any difference sadly. He will take that and use your words within it to further have a go at you with. He is not going to change and or have some epiphany; this is who he really is.

As others have also advised do research here and plan your exit. Your DC will also thank you for getting them away from him too.

Did he used to be much better than he is now OP?
if not, what was the thought process around having four kids?
Not trying to have a dig, just trying to understand the history there given every additional kid obviously puts pressure on finances/stress levels/free time etc

He was better before I started working as he had no choice i suppose, we also received benefits then. I was a full time mum until my 3rd went to school 9 years ago then it seemed to be well she has her own money now. Fell pregnant and terminated 7 years ago due to financial reasons and fell pregnant again and couldnt face another termination as the previous one I struggled with mentally. Contraception has never suited me ive tried them all and I constantly bleed heavy and have chronic iron deficiency now. He wont have a vasectomy

Sorry to say OP no amount of letter writing, explaining, justifying your intentions or getting him to see your viewpoint is going to make a blind bit of difference. You’ll just wear yourself out and I can imagine you’re already exhausted from this relationship.

As above no amount of explaining how you feel will help, because he benefits hugely from the way things are right now.

He pays way below the odds for his living costs.
He doesn't have to lift a finger at home.
He can piss off down the pub whenever he likes and play the Big Swinging Dick to his mates.
He has you as his emotional punchbag and household appliance at home.

He has zero incentive to change. Everything's great for him.

Believe me when I say I've gone over and over about him needing to help around the house and how often he goes out, the dog walks are 4 hours long especially in the summer. He's been out since 6.30 tonight and still not back. I enjoy the peace and not having to force a convo. Funny you say emotional punchbag as this is what he calls me when I voice my feelings

Rental in both names. It was a mutual decision not to marry

How long is left on the tenancy

NameChangeAgain48 · 20/07/2026 22:58

Have you looked at what you would be entitled to on benefits if he wasn't with you?

You could do a benefit calculator and see what you'd get as a single person still renting your accommodation on your current wage. It will give you an idea of what you'd be entitled to. It might make you feel less trapped. Also, if you decide to separate you can still claim as a single person even if ge refuses to move our if the house. You have to prove you have independent finances, ichores, sleeping arrangements and not act as a couplle or share a social life.

I think womans aid is a good starting point. He is financially and emotionally abusing you. The threat of suicide is scary but you aren't responsible for his mental health. My ex used fo threaten suicide as a control / manipulation tactics.

Yes I have and I'd be entitled to just under what i currently earn. Luckily my nan helps me with money weekly so goes towards food/petrol. I've just had a conversation with him and pinpointed what ive said on here, he said he isnt that bad 🤦‍♀️

He genuinely isnt a piece of shit, obviously how he is isnt acceptable, I am tired of how he is, and I crave more in life

He'll be telling you he doesn't hit you or womanise, so he isn't that bad and expects you to be grateful.

He isn't a good partner. He isn't a good parent. He isn't a good provider. He isn't even doing what a single person would need to do to support themselves. A single person would have to cook, clean, shop and pay more that £500 a month to live.

He keeps you skint so you have less options and feel powerless. He keeps you exhausted for exactly the same reason.

You are young. You should more on and find someone that cares about you, your happiness and wellbeing. To this guy you are just a service provider. As long as you do your jobs and stay in your box he is happy. It doesn't matter if your miserable. If it did he'd make changes. He'd care why your unhappy and make changes.

He says he isn't that bad.

It's not exactly a gsme-changing response, is it?
