I think I'd quite like to get married after all.

DP and I met over 5 years ago, we've been living together for nearly 4 years and we have an 11 month old DS. I've never been arsed about getting married (hate dresses, hate being centre of attention, no money) but recently I've been thinking that, aside from the obvious legal benefits (makes things much simpler, anyway) it might be quite nice to get married.

He's sort of asked, jokingly, a couple of times, and I've jokingly brushed him off, so now he says (jokingly?) that he's not asking me again. But it might be nice. To do something on the quiet, and then have a bit of a hoolie for friends and family afterwards. No pressure, no difficult napkin choices and fretting about guest lists.

Whaddya think, do I ask him to ask me again? We're not in for long engagements and we're totally penniless just now, but maybe in a year or two, we could do it. Has anyone been happily unmarried then changed their minds?

Ask him yourself and then do it soon. Why wait? It'll only snowball into a big bash!

I'm not married and have no DP I just remember it having a big impact on people at the time.

Impromtu cheap party at home after secretly getting married woud be lovely IMO!

You only need to save up enough to pay for the registrar, and some beer for your friends - go to registry office, and invite everyone you love to a big bring-your-own-barbeque party at yours/friend with garden whos in on the plot.

Merryberry and BohemianBint have both just had lovely weddings which were v low key.

If you wait 'a year or two' you'll either never get round to it, or it'll turn into a big bash.

Yep I agree - just elope go to the registry, and then have a garden party where people bring something!

We eloped in december, and had the party about 6 months later - the thrill was brill!!
We got caterers to deliver the food (I slaved over a hot phone) and we cranked up the BBQ to heat the food. We set out tables, benches and sideless marquees (borrowed) and had a buffet.

We had about 120 guests.
It cost about 500 quid, and my aunty brought lovely wine on a discount as a present with her cash and carry card.
All the kids had a ball as we had balloons and croquet!

Just set a date and organsise it. Don't have a long engagement and keep it quiet as these things tend to pick up complexity as they roll down hill. Send out invites when it's all in place.

Have a v cheap and fun wedding - everyone will enjoy it more (zazen's sounds lovely - but 120 people on £500, are u in the bible?)
