Partner’s game adverts show sexual and dating content, mine don’t, why?

TheMintDreamer · 16/03/2026 05:31

So me and my partner both play the same game
Lately his adverts are all of woman sexual and dating sites
Mine are not
Is this just one of them things or is it a algorithm type thing and its based on his search history/ click pattern
I know it sounds so minor and petty really but im really worried

I think it’s random. I play a game on my iPad and get adverts for manga style vaguely pornographic games all the time, I’m not the target audience!

BurnTheWholeThingDown · 16/03/2026 05:36

I also get dating sites adverts. I’m happily married for 20 years.

Mt563 · 16/03/2026 05:38

I get adverts for dating sites to meet older women. I am not the right target audience! Ad targeting is not as sophisticated as they'd like you to think.

TheMintDreamer · 16/03/2026 06:20

Thank you
I know to some it just sounds absolutely crazy to even doubt it but we did have a porn problem a few years ago and since then never doubted anything until I seen them adverts and thought that sites like that would trigger the adverts

He needs to use ad blockers to turn them off. Hopefully his use of porn won’t have restarted & they won’t reappear.

TheMintDreamer · 16/03/2026 06:32

Do you think the use of porn is promoting these adverts

I've noticed this - my DH frequently gets ads with AI generated women in various states of undress with impossibly large breasts, whereas I get constant Temu ads. I know DH doesn't watch porn. I can only assume it's something to do with algorithms knowing that he's male & therefore assumes that he would be interested in semi-naked women, whereas me, being female is interested in shopping. 🤐

Ironically enough he's the only one who's ever bought anything from Temu.

edited for typos

RedToothBrush · 16/03/2026 07:16

DH gets REALLY annoyed about the algorithm on Instagram.

He follows certain sports and wood working accounts. That's it.

He finds if he hasn't interacted enough with it lately it starts to default to showing him pretty women as suggested videos because it knows he's male and that's what it's set to do to get the attention of men again.

He gets annoyed because this isn't what he wants to see - he just wants his sport and stupid wood working videos.

He's not saying this to appease me. I don't check his phone nor am I particularly arsed. It annoys him because he knows what it reflects and it's not good. (He works in tech so it's relevant in that sense).

mindutopia · 16/03/2026 09:33

Does the account know he’s a man? Like are his personal details inputted anywhere? I would guess that’s why.

FloydPink · 16/03/2026 09:51

Sometimes it easy to click on an ad by mistake (could be anything from houses to cooking to dating) and then it gives you lots of the same ad!

MrThorpeHazell · 16/03/2026 10:22

The algorithm has identified him as male. I get all these sorts of ads on every supposedly "male" related site I'm on from fishing to model railways.

I would not read too much into it.

Oh yes, and "Live Jasmine" pops up everywhere!

MrThorpeHazell · 16/03/2026 10:24

TheMintDreamer · 16/03/2026 06:32

Do you think the use of porn is promoting these adverts

No. It's the use of what the algorithm thinks of as specifically "male related" sites.

Edited for typo.

TheMintDreamer · 16/03/2026 12:12

As far as I know he does go on some gambling sites and then just plays his games on apps
The apps don't know he's male

I do watch porn sometimes, but I never get ads connected to that. I also look up a lot of football content, but I never get sports content advertised either.

So no, I doubt it’s porn use that’s triggering his ads. It’s more likely just that the algorithm knows he’s a man and is making assumptions about what he’ll be interested in based on that.

There are loads of ways an app might guess he is male.

Also, worth noting that people who never gamble get loads of gambling ads on porn sites, so it may be simply why the apps are predisposed to see a connection between those two things.

Kelim · 16/03/2026 13:01

The way these algorithms work is not by identifying you specifically and then serving you things, but by grouping you into an audience bucket and matching that audience to content. You really cannot reverse engineer his ads to porn use. If you think he's using porn and you don't like that, you will have to have a conversation. The ads are not evidence either way.

Basically it derives a set of numbers, embeddings, from properties like location, dwell times, clicks, history and lots and lots of other things. These embeddings are like coordinates, they place the user in a vectorspace, and then the audience bucket scoops up an area of the vectorspace and serves them all ads. So you might gets ads served to you because you live near lots of people who might buy those things, because you're a similar age or sex, or much more esoteric connections that nobody can really track based on what other people who seem a bit like you like. People-like-you like this.

This is why Youtube often serves me manosphere stuff. I'm not interested in those things as I'm a middle aged woman, but my job is 98% male so I guess my colleagues are. Our mutual and unrelated interest in linear algebra, see above, is clustering me with them.

TheMintDreamer · 16/03/2026 15:12

Thank you everyone for the replies I've never doubted him when it comes to using i just seen them adverts the other day and started to worry I was been nieve trusting him stupid I know but past relationship done some things and I try not reflect that on our relationship so coming on something like this to ask just puts my mind at rest

I once tested this on fb.. I made a new account and said I was male.. I didn't add anyone to it, I didn't follow or like any pages etc, all it showed in the timeline was feet pics, half naked women and dating ads..

No, sorry you THINK the apps don't know he's male.

I suggest that even if they don't know, they make an "educated guess" on the basis of probabilities.

Obviously I ment its not the kind of apps that ask for any info 🤦
I'm not saying they definitely don't know he's male just that he hasnt actually inputted any details
