It’s just hoarding but jazzed up as hobbies, it will wear you down so fucking much and it never stops, been there done that got the tshirt, I feel you, it’s honestly a bit soul destroying which sounds dramatic, but it’s just so fucking selfish being like I shall fill up a house with crap most of it barely used.

Gettoachiro · 27/12/2025 09:12

Tell him to get a man shed at the bottom of the garden. Or as you have a large house designate one room for his hobbies/collections. It works perfectly in my house. Two or three Star Wars collectors pieces on display and the rest are down in the shed.

A dartboard in the living room is a big no no.

Thud thud, thud...............thud, thud, thud..............thud, thud, thud.

Sod that.

He has the office for (the collectibles) the double garage (for the cars and bikes) tbe summer house (for the N
BBQs) and the main living room for his collections and his PlayStation and antiques that I have mentally partitioned as his The dining room snug kitchen hall and bedrooms are communal. The dart board is in the snug.

Dartboard in the living room? No chance - it could be a basketball hoop next!
( I hope he hasn't already got one...)

Gettoachiro · 27/12/2025 09:26

Take it down then. Talk with him, say he has enough places to put stuff without things spreading even more. That you don't feel like it is your home too. The collections can go out of the living room too bar one or two maybe.

He SHOULD be happy to listen to you but if he isn't happy, reclaim the office or living room as yours then if he wants the snug, make the office a library instead, a nice (single) cosy chair etc 🤣 or start collecting nicely coloured stones or something to put in there.

puppyparent · 27/12/2025 09:27

i can empathise. My DH has various changing hobbies/interests, all of which seem to require a lot of stuff (baking, woodworking, antiques, tech) and on top of this he is a prepper (worried about running out of food, batteries, etc). He’s a dangerous man with a Costco card 🤣 We live in a small house and so the rules are: no clutter or crap allowed in our communal spaces, and I reserve the right to tidy up and throw stuff away if it’s just sitting around. It. It has caused a lot of rows over the years

Not yet thank god.

I Said it’s not staying there is it? He said of course not I told him to put it in the garage

we have a solution! The dart board is going on the back of the office door.

Lightuptheroom · 27/12/2025 12:33

No to the dart board. My dh has an extensive collection of model trains, some are on display in one cabinet, these are rotated according to what he wants to display. Everything else to do with this hobby lives in the spare room upstairs which is also part loft so that suits both of us. We're also both musical so the other spare room stores all our music. He needs to learn to organise 'his' stuff better

CluelessAboutBiology · 27/12/2025 13:31

@Gettoachiromy DP has three sheds (in our small garden) plus a garage 😞

Nincompoo · 27/12/2025 13:34

I’m the hobbiest and collector in my family and my stuff is everywhere but I’m the only household member who doesn’t have their own room so 🤷🏽‍♀️

if I had a room to myself though I’d keep it (mostly!) contained

cherrypied · 27/12/2025 16:48

I’m glad I’m not the only one in this situation. We had baking, curry, Chinese food, bbq, camping, taxidermy, cigarette cards, tea, triathlon, gaming, cars, Lego, vinyl, beer, meat cooking, home cinema, Trainers

all of this is horded as it will be “worth something one day” so we have 4 cars, three bikes, 6 Bbqs, pizza oven, hundreds of beer glasses, loft full of LEGO, boxes and boxes of vinyl, ps-5, x box, 60 pairs of trainers,

we are not rich! He is just very financially savvy and sells stuff to buy other stuff,

OP posts:
Lightuptheroom · 27/12/2025 16:53

I'd suggest he sells some of the stuff and uses the money to go on a nice holiday or something

UpDownAllAround1 · 27/12/2025 19:21

Well you married him and must have known

The thing is it accumulates over the years though. Couple of hobbies when you marry, then they don’t throw those out but start a new hobby… DH is a bit of a hoarder hobbyist, we have odd moments when I go mad. It’s mainly all in his room and the house is pretty tidy tbf but dear Christ, sometimes I open a cupboard and there’s more of his fucking stuff. We had to clear out recently and even the DC were walking from room to room saying “yours, yours, yours…”
