Dont want to give too many details so will just give whats relevant
Unmarried couple had baby, moved in with the Mothers parents due to very high rent in area.
Father works but does not contribute to child at all (maybe a few things rarely every month)
Mother is carer for child as child is registered disabled.

Mother and father have now had a relationship breakdown.
Father left after being told they are not welcome
Now worried the father and his family (they have loads of money and are not the kind who take no for an answer) will fight for custody or take child without consent.

Where does the Mother stand?

The mother needs legal help. If there is solid reason to believe he is planning kidnap the child the police should be informed.
I would think it highly unlikely that he could ever get sole custody, but unfortunately 50/50 is likely, even though he is apparently complete shit as a father. His lack of contribution to the child needs to be documented and he should be paying child support.
