Becoming a grandparent for the first time

Would you prefer to find out the news earlier via video call (after 12 week scan) or a few weeks later in person (whilst visiting your pregnant child)? We are at a distance and for other family reasons the visit can’t happen just after 12 week scan. Relationships between all concerned are good. Thanks!

Straight away. But in our family everyone was told way before the 12 week scan

MikeRafone · 13/06/2025 19:44

video Call

Sunshineismyfavourite · 13/06/2025 19:45

Yep asap for me. I'd much rather know via video call than wait 2 weeks.

Lovelysnores · 13/06/2025 19:52

ASAP. But we are quite used to sharing big news that way because we all live quite far apart.

OneLemonLion · 13/06/2025 20:17

Thank you! I was actually expecting the opposite so this has been really helpful :)

ASAP!!!!!! Congrats 🥳

I think whatever the parents to be want is fine, I'm a grandparent and didn't think it was my place to have a preference.

MsNevermore · 13/06/2025 20:19

I told my mum and only my mum within days of a positive test.
With my third, my mum actually suggested I might be pregnant before it had even clicked in my brain 😂 she was outside the bathroom door while I took the test, so she knew before the father even knew 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

mindutopia · 13/06/2025 20:39

I’d rather be told in person, assuming I was told roughly the same time as other grandparents and everyone else. You aren’t waiting 2 weeks when you don’t even know it’s happening. I’d like to actually be able to hug my child and their partner and have a proper catch up. Over video call seems like we’re having a work meeting or you’re just making the rounds and ticking off people to tell.

WorkingNotTwerking · 13/06/2025 20:40

Either way would be perfectly fine for me.

dontcomeatme · 13/06/2025 20:43

I told my mam the day I tested positive 😅

Nan2be26 · 20/02/2026 23:35

I was told over video call just this.week becausr they are both at uni and they really were worried about what I would say. "Mum I'm sending you something and I don't want you to freak out" then a picture came through of 3 positive pregnancy tests. Please can you come and see me ASAP. They have a scan booked for next friday.
I am sure everyone will be happy whatever way you tell them, congratulations.

Gobolino80 · 20/02/2026 23:41

I will never forget the video call where I found out my daughter was pregnant with the love of my life (DGS) but whatever way you tell then (and when) it will be perfect, don’t overthink it.

Chinsupmeloves · 20/02/2026 23:53

Usually after 12 week scan
