Male friend told me my clothes are ‘old fashioned’

I’m 52 and about 6 months ago I did internet dating and met up with someone on it. I decided I didn’t fancy him but he seems very attracted to me. After 2 dates I informed him that was how I felt but he said that was ok he just wanted to be friends. I suppose because my circumstances mean I lack company I agreed because he is ok although a bit irritating. I also thought well it might just expand my social circle. I still feel though he is just trying to work his way into being in a relationship with me. And I don’t fancy him. He phoned me to arrange to meet up for a cup of coffee somewhere and then said this: I’m going to take you shopping because your clothes are ‘old fashioned’! He has also said other stuff to me such as telling me I’m ‘posh’. I think this is enough! I’m going to text him and say I don’t want to meet him again and end this. What would you do

Exactly that.

Jellyrols · 29/05/2025 20:23

Dump.

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/05/2025 20:25

Run 😆

TwistedWonder · 29/05/2025 20:26

I wouldn’t even bother texting him. I’d just block the twat and forget he ever existed

Zanatdy · 29/05/2025 20:28

Seems a bit much, for a friend. Maybe just ditch his friendship.

GettingFestiveNow · 29/05/2025 20:30

Negging = instant dumping.

(Negging - when men make rude comments in a nasty attempt to make you feel like you would be lucky to have them)

Craftycorvid · 29/05/2025 20:31

Goodness! Life’s too short for this degree of annoying idiot. Dump his ass.

Weaponofchoice · 29/05/2025 20:32

Tell him he’s a boring cliche who can’t handle rejection, maybe?

EBearhug · 29/05/2025 20:40

I might have asked him to send me links to clothes he thinks I should wear, out of curiosity, (and so i could share with female friends for amusement,) but I'd decline his offer to go shopping, because I'm fussy about how fabrics feel and about colours, and in any case, I'm in my 50s, I can afford my own clothes and I buy things I like. if others don't like it, that's tough on them.

Sofiewoo · 29/05/2025 20:41

He’s not your friend.

EBearhug · 29/05/2025 20:42

I did have a date who said he thought I'd look good in lipstick. I do not wear make-up, and I still do not wear make-up.

Fididjdd · 29/05/2025 20:55

I think he is very rude to say that and agree with PP who said he is negging. I totally think he is hoping at some point you'll stop "friend-zoning" him / will wear you down. He sounds like a "nice guy" https://xkcd.com/513/

I totally get what you mean about wanting your social circle to expand, I am in the same position myself, but you shouldn't settle.
I would be a bit pissed off if a friend I'd known for a long time called my clothes old fashioned and I would end the friendship if it was a new "friend" saying this.

Friends

Hammys · 29/05/2025 20:59

Well it’s done. I texted him and said I didn’t want to meet again or be just friends. He seems to think I should wear tight clothes and short skirts.

You've done the right thing

He doesn't want to be friends anyway, and he'd be a horrible friend

He was basically negging you. That's not someone who's fit for friendship.

There’s a shock - not. So he’s the sort of bloke who thinks women should have their tits and arse hanging out at all times.

Sad little middle aged delusional twat

someonehastoberight · 29/05/2025 21:15

He’s trying to bring you down a peg or two. Either in the hope you will realise you would be lucky to snag him or to put you in your place! Either way your better off with out him

UsernameNotAvailableTryAnotherOnee · 29/05/2025 21:17

Dump. He's trying to put you down.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of clothes do you wear?

BerfyTigot · 29/05/2025 21:25

I'm hoping OP is going to say she wears hoop skirts and big ruffs...

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 29/05/2025 21:28

Do you really need to ask? You don't fancy him, he's annoying and now he's insulted your dress sense. Why is this even a question? Don't go.

SailingWonder · 29/05/2025 21:28

Take you shopping? Does he think he’s your dad?!?

I wear lots of styles. Casual trousers with a top and trainers a lot . One day we met I was wearing a sundress with a hooded zip up top and another a cord skirt that was just above my knees and a blouse and trainers

It's fantastic isn't it. Hit home for me so hard when I realised how many of my relationships had been with Nice Guys 🫤
