At drinks and they made a comment about being worried about their friends who didn’t socialise. And I was like oh is that cos they’re busy with work / kids and he went no they hate their jobs and their wives. I said that was very sad and they went well it’ll happen to you and your friends one day too

Strange thing to say.

Your colleague has... er... issues. Don't give it another thought.

It’s really wound me up!

Does anyone have any advice as to how I can handle this? Colleague is senior to me and I am their direct report. I don’t feel I can complain but do feel very put out by what was basically a mean comment.

Don't give it headspace. That's a "them" issue. So unprofessional.

Not really, no. Work colleagues are not freinds as such and alcohol was flowing. Id just think twice about putting myself in that environment../

Besides, what people think of us is none of our business.

We all work with a range of people we like, are polite to because they're just colleagues and weirdos we avoid. I guess this colleague is in the third category.

You don’t need to do anything. It was not an attack on you in any way for you to do something. You’re overthinking it.

There is nothing to report. People are entitled to be bitter.
