How many marriage certificates do I need?

I got married last week and we just got one marriage certificate. I’m going to take my new husband’s name and now I’ve started looking into changing things I realise I need multiple copies so I can send them off to people like the DVLA.

This sounds really stupid but does anyone know how many I’ll probably need? I’m going to call the registrar office in the morning and I don’t want to keep calling for more but also don’t want to order too many as I have to pay for each copy!

I got 2. You rarely need to send them off anywhere at the same time. In 15 years, I’ve never needed both of them for anything.

I only have one. Everyone seems to demand to see the original not copies when changing ur name. Very annoying ! I wish there was a service you could get to change ur name on everything with ease !

Coffeeishot · 05/03/2025 19:22

Just the 1 you just send off then wait for it to come back, there isn't much you need to send off really.

Sanch1 · 05/03/2025 19:31

I had one but got a solicitor friend to photocopy them and sign them so they were then certified copies for sending off.

Thank you - I’ll just get one more then. It’s not something I’d thought about until now so I felt a bit panicked!

The ‘copies’ you get from the registry office are not photocopies they are basically exactly all the same. Proper certificates. I got 3arruafr certificates when I picked mine up. She asked how many I wanted and then were £10 for each one.

BlumminFreezin · 05/03/2025 19:40

I also got 2. We've kept the original, the one we both actually signed...I wouldn't want to risk sending it anywhere tbh. The other one I used to send a couple of places but tbh most were willing to just accept an emailed copy of the original anyway.

shardlakem · 05/03/2025 19:59

I got 2 and that was fine, we kept one at home and one got sent around to various places!

Same

was told cheaper to buy 3 at the same time then Reorder and buy at a later date

everyone Seems to want an original - passport - driving license - bank accounts

Confusedmermaid1 · 05/03/2025 22:49

I got 3 but two would have been fine
Saying that it’s been over a year and I still haven’t changed my name on everything 😅

It was £10 on that day but future ones would be £15 for some reason.

This.

Having 'lost' one to Bristol and West (we know they got it as other stuff in same envelope was actioned), I'd say get at least 2-3 spares.

Same. One to keep, one to send off and one to inevitably lose 🤭

TickingAlongNicely · 06/03/2025 12:53

We managed to destroy our wedding certificate within a month of the wedding! (Turns out they aren't washable...). Our "copy" is indistinguishable from the "original"

You rarely need it after the first flurry. The last time I needed it was for DBS.

I'd go for two copies. They are really easy to replace in the future if you need to.

rrrrrreatt · 07/03/2025 21:18

I’ve bought two more copies so we’ll have three in total and the original that we signed can stay safe in the documents file!

They were £12.50 each but they only post them once a week?! and the fee for getting one urgently was £38 so I thought it would be worth getting two this time.

I checked this one would be an original so I could use it for the bank, DVLA, etc - now to start the long process of changing everything when it arrives!
