An Old Love

I'm very happy with my DH, we've been together for 15 years.

However recently I'm been dreaming (as in whilst asleep) about someone I loved very much around 25 years ago.

I was heartbroken when the relationship ended but had moved on, had lots of experiences and then met and settled down with my DH. I had barely thought of this other man until the dreams started.

Has anyone else experienced this? It's put me in a bit of a turmoil to be honest, I don't understand why my brain is doing this! I'm in peri menopause and have recently started HRT, I don't know if that could be affecting my emotions at all?

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Are you happy in your marriage? Have you seen anyone in common with him? Is there any aspect of your life that isn't fulfilling to you that you think would have been by him?

Last week I dream my ex h and I were together, in a new house with our children. He gave me a look like he wanted to kiss me. Then the dog ran in the road.

I took this that my brain was just checking in that I made the right decision to divorce him - 100% I did - and I can't trust him to look after the dog.

Other people will say brains mean nothing but I thibk sometimes they are just a way of emptying the brain.

Once I dreamt my h was having an affair. I barely spoke to him all day. He said he wasn't responsible for what I dreamt about. When I look back, yep, he was already talking to the bitch he slept with. He was a bastard obviously.

I often have dreams about a man I used to love when I was in my teens.

We went our separate ways after he moved to another country to become a forest firefighter.

I have a recurring dream where we are facing each other in a field. We catch each others eyes and begin to run towards each other with open arms. As he reaches me we pause and he leans in to kiss me.

Unfortunately at that exact moment his skull is pierced by a frozen block of toilet waste from an airplane passing overhead.

I wake up just after seeing his body lying on the ground; his lips still parsed but a look of dazed confusion in his eyes.

I don't know if this means anything either. Probably not.

Sounds like it's quite common to dream about an ex. It's good to know, I won't read too much into it.

Thanks for your replies. 🙂

@1990sChick Sometimes I can't get his face out of my head during the day. Not his actual face, I mean his expression after he's been lobotomised by the toilet waste.

I wonder if somewhere in the world that actually happened to him and it's the universe telling me. Or a tree fell on him or something.

I hope not but it really feels like it might.

2025willbemytime · 19/02/2025 17:41

@HaveFaithMyChild could you search to see if he is still alive?

I sometimes dream about my teenage / young adult ex. It's always quite passionate.

MounjaroOnMyMind · 19/02/2025 17:42

If he was abusive, @HaveFaithMyChild I'd say it was karma!

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 19/02/2025 17:46

It’s likely when you’re ovulating I bet.

@2025willbemytime I'm almost afraid to.

We left on good terms. I think I'd rather just let my imagination keep running wild at this point.

1990sChick · 19/02/2025 18:22

I'm also not going to try to contact my ex. I'm very happy with my DH and my life in general and really don't want to do anything that might compromise that.

What are you afraid of? That's he's single? That he's died? Something else?

Wonderwhyy · 19/02/2025 18:51

I'm the same, I love my DH of 10 years very much and couldn't imagine being with anyone else... Yet I still from time to time dream about my first love and it's always very passionate even though our relationship wasn't that great and there was a few after him.
I don't think it means anything other than you never forget your first love..

So common. The frozen block of toilet waste is in every dream decoding article / book.

@2025willbemytime I'm not entirely sure. Possibly if I see pictures of him and I fall in love again. What if that happens and he is dead? It's not like he'll have left me anything in his will. Plus I think he moved to Greenland so it's not a place that's on my bucket list.

My first love found me again. It's a powerful thing, feelings.

Yes! I have been going through the same thing recently. I wonder if this can go both ways..!

Deadly serious. Infact I’m talking from the grave after dying from a frozen toilet-berg incident. 😆

About 2 years ago I had a reoccurring dream constantly about my 1st love (40 years ago) turns out he had died the week I started dreaming about him. Uncanny!

Were it real, and for all I know it could be, that's probably what it would feel like, yes.

@2025willbemytime

I get that.

In terms of pure raw emotion though, I'm beginning to think that what feels like a genuine experience, watching the once love of your life getting their head pierced by a solid block of frozen fecal matter, is going to be hard to supplant as the most real of feelings. Even if isn't real.

If it turns out to be some sort of premonition I will be surprised but not totally so.

I keep an eye on the Greenland daily news bulletins just in case his name appears in the headlines.

Have you tried googling him? It might put you off him.I googled the One that Got Away a few tears ago, only to find out he is now an Evangelical Christian who quit his job to go on the road preaching with his wife and kids. Now I think I had a lucky escape! He was an extremely hot lead singer in a band when I dated him, talk about a let down!
