How to divide up expenses?

I'm just looking for advice on how best and fairly to divide up travel costs. My bf and I and my 2 children went on a trip recently and we rented a car, the cost came to £500. Should we 50/50 costs like this as we are two adults, or should I pay 3/4 of the cost and he pay 1/4 of the costs as we are 3 people and he is 1? I just want to make sure whatever we do is fair so that we are setting it the breakdown of costs like this fairly for the future. Thanks for any advice!

I’d say as it’s a car, 50/50 is fair.

If it was a hotel or villa and you needed a bigger place because of the children then I could see where you would pay a bigger % of that cost, but for a car which you’d both need and use anyway 50/50 is fine.

Technically, you could argue 3:1, but that's excessive considering not all things are used the same way.

Car 50:50
Room 50:50 (but maybe look at the difference in prince between 2 person room vs 4...)
Food pay what you eat
Flights 3:1
Tickets (entertainment) pay cost

If there were just two of you would you have hired the car/paid the same?

Thanks. Yeah we stayed a night in a hotel while away and got two rooms, one for us and one for the kids. I paid for the kids room and half of our room.

Yes, I suppose we would have. We booked a small car.

This is how I'd see it. Plus if it's early days it's really cheeky to expect him to pay 50/50 to take your children on holiday

PondWarrior · 26/01/2025 21:06

I’d offer 3/4 but expect any reasonable partner to turn that down and say 1/2 is fair.

Fidgety31 · 26/01/2025 21:47

I pay three quarters in the same situations . It wouldn’t be fair to expect my partner to pay for my children.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 26/01/2025 21:49

I'd do 50/50 for the car... unless your children needed car seats added on as 'extras' in which case I'd cover that too.

Nellyelephanty · 26/01/2025 21:49

I think as pp said for room cost and days out you pay for the kids but the car should be 50:50 if he’s not a complete dick

GoWestInTheOpenAir · 27/01/2025 10:49

Thanks all! No, I'm not expecting him to pay for my kids at all. I'm just new to this and wanted to get input on the most fair way to divide up expenses in this scenario. Thanks for the input!
