Male coworker stares a lot, but has backed off this past week

I noticed that a male coworker who I know but haven’t had much conversation has been staring at me a lot over the past month.

He is hot, so it does feel like an intense sexual attraction when our eyes meet. When we have spoken it’s a little awkward on both sides and mainly reverts to work.

I caught him the other day staring at me and as soon as I looked at him, he turned away quickly and looked down.

In the past week, it seems like he’s backed off a bit since then, so what’s going on? Why do men do this?

Maybe he likes you or maybe he stares into space when thinking.

It doesn't sound like he's done a great deal. You were looking at him sometimes when he was looking at you for 3 weeks give or take and had some stilted chats. This week he's looked away more. The sexual attraction narrative may be real or imagined, but I wouldn't read too much into it on the basis of what's here. He might've liked looking at you, realised it's awkward and stopped doing it, which is no bad thing. Hot or not, it doesn't sound like the conversation was very sparky and better that it was about work and that nothing happens to make it more awkward in the office.
