Farting anywhere and everywhere

Queserasera1 · 29/07/2024 21:15

Not sure if this is a relationship question. But is farting anywhere and everywhere normal? I know you can’t always predict it but surely if you can contain yourself elsewhere, you can do the same at home? Not talking about the odd fart just constant and anywhere even when the family are eating. Or do I have unrealistic expectations?

My ex did this. Disgusting. So glad he's an ex tbh. Manners cost nothing

TipsyJoker · 29/07/2024 22:25

Tell him he needs to go to the doctor and check there’s nothing wrong with him because excess flatulence can be a sign of underlying medical conditions. Also, tell him you find it disgusting and it puts you off him sexually. That should help him out a cork in it.

boombang · 29/07/2024 22:26

lactose intolerance?

Morningsiesta · 29/07/2024 22:28

Not everyone can control it. If he can, then it's rude not to.

TomatoSandwiches · 29/07/2024 22:29

The odd one here and there ok but when you're eating or with lots of company absolutely not, you go to the bathroom.

Tell him to stop, that would be it for me, I'd go off someone doing that all the time.

BettyBardMacDonald · 29/07/2024 22:37

I couldn't be attracted to anyone who did that.

otravezempezamos · 29/07/2024 22:40

I mean, we all fart just as we all breathe. But there is a difference between one slipping out and going out of your way to do it with no shame.
Blanket ban on deliberate farting in bed or the sofa. That’s just gross. Although having a dog you can blame is handy 😂💨

bosqueverde · 29/07/2024 22:42

It partly changes through self-control, but if it is a frequent occurrence, it's a digestive problem. You don't have unrealistic expectations, only for your partner to live up to them, it's going to take more than house training.

Seeing a doctor is a good idea in case there are underlying conditions, as PP said. I'll also mention:

  • French pharmacies sell purified charcoal (in pill sized doses) as medication against flatulence. The charcoal traps various things, so better digestion and less gas! I don't know if the same is found in the UK, but worth asking maybe (btw charcoal is a known anti-poison)
  • Oil pulling did it for me (I'm a teacher. As a PP says - better put a cork in it!) - oil pulling consists in swishing a spoonful of oil in mouth every day, a kind of mouth rinse. I can't tell you if more conventional options like salt water work, I haven't tried. The problem though, is in relationships, every morning your DP won't be able to talk and he'll look like a hamster 😆

I don’t understand how oil pulling could possibly work for flatulence, you are not supposed to swallow the oil!

Topseyt123 · 29/07/2024 23:15

Better out than in, I say. Fart away.

We're not bothered in this house but would obviously make an effort to control it a bit in company.

I find fart control challenging due to IBS, so I have to have a sense of humour about it.

Opentooffers · 29/07/2024 23:15

Does he drink real ale by any chance ?😷 Fart juice in a pint that stuff is.

Hattie48 · 29/07/2024 23:16

Ltb

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 29/07/2024 23:19

Not normal to do this anywhere and everywhere. He's obviously eating or drinking something that's causing gas. I find farting repugnant, especially the stench. Also hate burping. Vile sound, and really vulgar. 😖

mathanxiety · 29/07/2024 23:39

If he can't control it, he needs to see a doctor.

If he can control it, then he's a pig.

MouseofCommons · 29/07/2024 23:49

It's painful to control it out of the house tbh. I have to but I can't at home (I am single and will stay that way).
If he's unhealthy he needs to sort it out, but some gas seems to be incurable.

Countessmaladjusted · 29/07/2024 23:53

Fart all the time at home.
I teach for a living and is would be death if the kids heard me, so I often hold it in. As a peri menopausal woman, this does me no favours. I hate how hung up on natural body functions we all are. My day to day life would be so much nicer if I didn't have to be so aware of when I can fart.

Disturbia81 · 29/07/2024 23:55

I would not be able to be sexual and affectionate with someone whose guts I was always smelling. He doesn't respect you.. Bet he'd have an issue with you not having sex with him.
Accidental occasional ones are funny, we both evacuate before the smell hits!

Bad memories of being young and brothers and cousins all doing big smelly ones all the time and it was just gross.
Occasional and accidental = fine
Pushing them out = disgusting and disrespectful

BettyBardMacDonald · 30/07/2024 00:35

I'm 61 years old, have had numerous lovers, LTRs and one husband. I have never heard or experienced one of my men doing that - or vice versa - in my life.

Are people just less couth nowadays? I would be mortified if it were me and turned off if it were him.

I don't know either, but the result was there, so I stay with it! Whatever it's done to my mouth has changed my digestive system for the better.
Basically if op's partner wants to control this, squeezing his cheeks is not the only option 😅

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/07/2024 06:32

Perhaps with some of practice and a bit of added finesse, he could obtain an evening job as a novelty act in a working man's club?

I'm sure the extra income would be more than welcome.

@bosqueverde Did you make any other changes around the same time? I hated oil pulling but might have to try again! What oil do you use? Sorry OP for the derail..

Not really, certainly not things that lasted.
I hated it - not being able to talk, slightly disgusting and painful jaw in the early weeks!
I'm used to it but it's certainly weird to get used to.

I've just found a container of lawn mower oil in the shed that we no longer require, having replaced our lawn with artificial grass (I got it from a defunct greengrocers shop where it used to adorn a large outdoor trestle table)

Anyway I'll be giving that a 'swish' later and we'll see what happens.

Unless there's a medical issue, then gross. Even then go to another room. I used to have a friend and I have an aunt who do this, they don't think it's a big deal so don't see why it is for anyone else. The friend is an ex friend and soon I'm going to tell my aunt how disgusting she is, as she will only do it in front of certain people. It's just not necessary!
