Restoring deleted WhatsApp messages?

For obvious reasons, I'm curious to know if it's possible to restore deleted WhatsApp conversations? A quick google all looks a bit spammy and my heads all over the place!

Have they been backed up anywhere?

persistentyes · 29/07/2024 16:44

if he’s deleted messages OP

unless he’s planning a surprise party for you

it really can only mean one thing

will assume you are going through a partners phone, and have not found what you were expecting, and have now decided that the messages must have been deleted.

i think some messages are backed up, but not sure if this included whatsapp or not.

i also think if this is the case, and you suspect wrong doing, do you really need to see said messages? the relationship is over by your actions

You can install WhatsApp on a different phone using the same SIM card, and restore WhatsApp to a previous back up. This will notify the original phone that they are no longer using that phone for WhatsApp and it will also mean getting hold of his SIM card of course. None of that is very easy and probably not worth doing unless you are 100% sure you'll find evidence of cheating.

Not according to Boris Johnson...

WhatsApp Settings - chats - chat back up

Will tell you when it was last backed up. If that was yesterday at 9pm for example, I believe that theoretically you could uninstall the app and then reinstall and it will give you all messages that were there yesterday at 9pm.

Disclaimer: if you're doing all this you probably already know what you're going to find, do you need the proof ?

My understanding if a whole conversation or thread is deleted it will go to the “archived” folder which is at the top above the most recent conversation on the “chats” tab.

If, however, individual messages have been deleted within a conversation, they can’t be recovered as far as I’m aware.

From my knowledge, restoring deleted WhatsApp messages depends on whether the chats were backed up. If they were, you could uninstall and reinstall the app, and during the setup, it should give you the option to restore messages from the last backup.
If there’s no backup, recovering messages gets a lot trickier, and honestly, most of those recovery tools out there can feel spammy and unreliable.
I’d also echo what others have said—check the chat backup settings in WhatsApp under Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. That’ll at least give you an idea if there’s a chance of recovery.

If you feel the need to do this, the relationship is already over.
